1 ¶ IN the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and besieged it. 2 And the LORD delivered it into his hand, together with Jehoiakim king of Judah and the vessels of the house of the LORD, which he carried away into the land of Sinar, to the house of his idol; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his idol. 3 And the king spoke to Ashpaz the chief of the eunuchs, that he should bring some of the children of Israel, of the royal families, and of the Parthians; 4 Boys in whom was no blemish, who were handsome in their appearance and skillful in all wisdom and cunning in knowledge and understanding of science, those who were able to stand in the king’s palace to minister to him, and whom they might teach the learning and the language of the Chaldeans. 5 And the king assigned them a daily portion of the king’s delicacies and of the wine which he drank, to nourish them for three years, so that afterward they might stand before the king. 6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; 7 And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names; Daniel he named Belteshazzar; and Hananiah, Shadrach; and Mishael, Meshach; and Azariah, Abednego.""
8 ¶ But Daniel decided in his heart that he would not eat of the king’s delicacies nor drink of the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he would not force him to eat. 9 Now God gave Daniel grace and mercy in the presence of the chief of the eunuchs. 10 And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has given orders concerning your food and concerning your drink; should he see your faces worse looking than the faces of the boys of your own age, then the king will have me beheaded. 11 Then Daniel said to Menezar, whom the chief of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 Test your servants for ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the boys who eat of the king’s delicacies be examined; and as you see, deal with your servants. 14 So he consented to them in this matter and tested them for ten days. 15 And at the end of ten days he saw that their countenances were much fairer and fatter than those of all the boys who ate of the king’s delicacies. 16 Thus Menezar took away the portion of their food and the wine that they should drink, and gave them vegetables to eat and water to drink.""
17 ¶ As for these four boys, God gave them knowledge and understanding in every book and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. 18 Now when the days that the king had commanded were over, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before King Nebuchadnezzar. 19 And the king spoke with them; and he found none among all of them like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; therefore they stood before the king. 20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding that the king inquired of them he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in his whole realm. 21 And Daniel continued even to the first year of king Cyrus.""
2:1 ¶ AND in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed a dream and his spirit was troub1ed and his sleep departed from him. 2 Then the king commanded to call the magicians and the astrologers and the sorcerers and the Chaldeans to show the king his dream. So they came and stood before the king. 3 And the king said to them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit is troubled to know the dream. 4 Then spoke the Chaldeans before the king in Aramaic, saying, O king, live for ever; tell your servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation. 5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The word that I have spoken is true; if you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall be cut in pieces and your houses shall be plundered. 6 But if you show me the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive from me gifts and wealth and great honor; only show me the dream and its interpretation. 7 They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show its interpretation. 8 The king answered and said, Truly I know that what you want is time, because you see that my word is true. 9 But if you will not make known to me the dream, there is but one sentence for you; for you have prepared lying words and falsehoods to speak before me, to gain time; therefore tell me the dream, so that I shall know that you can show me its interpretation. 10 The Chaldeans answered before the king and said, There is not a man upon the earth who can reveal what the king asks; neither has any great king or ruler ever asked such a thing of any magician or astrologer or Chaldean. 11 For the thing that the king is asking is very difficult, and there is no man who can show it before the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with men born of flesh. 12 Then the king was exceedingly furious, and he commanded angrily that all the wise men of Babylon should be destroyed. 13 And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and guards sought Daniel and his companions to slay them.""
14 ¶ Then Daniel meditated and took counsel, and then said to Arioch the commander of the king’s guardsmen, who had gone out to slay the wise men of Babylon, 15 Why is this decree from the king so urgent? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel. 16 Then Daniel desired of the king to give him time, and promised that he would show the king the interpretation. 17 Then Daniel went to his house and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, 18 That they might ask mercy before the God of heaven concerning the mystery, so that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 Then was the mystery, revealed to Daniel in a night vision. And Daniel blessed the God of heaven. 20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever; for wisdom and might belong to him; 21 And he changes seasons and times; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to them who know understanding; 22 He reveals the deep and secret things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light is with him. 23 To thee, O God of my fathers, I give thanks, and I praise thee, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast now made known to me what we desired of thee; for thou hast made known to us the king’s matter.""
24 ¶ And in that very hour Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had ordered to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he went and spoke thus to him: Destroy not the wise men of Babylon; but bring me in before the king and I will show the king the interpretation. 25 Then Arioch brought Daniel in before the king in haste, and spoke thus to him: I have found a man of the captives of Judah who will make known to the king the interpretation. 26 The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Are you able to make known to me the dream which I have seen, and its interpretation? 27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The mystery which the king has demanded to know, can no wise men, sorcerers, nor the magicians, nor the astrologers reveal to the king; 28 But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, who has made known to the King Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Your dream and the vision of your head upon your bed are these; 29 As for you, O king, your thoughts came into your mind concerning what shall come to pass hereafter; and he who reveals mysteries has made known to you what shall come to pass. 30 But as for me, this mystery is not revealed to me on account of any wisdom that I have more than any living person, but for the sake of the interpretation, that it might be known to the king and that you may know the thoughts of your heart.""
31 ¶ You, O king, were looking, and behold, a great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before you; and its appearance was terrible. 32 This image’s head was of fine gold, its breast and arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of brass, 33 Its legs of iron, its feet part of iron and part of clay. 34 Then you saw that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon its feet that were of iron and clay, and broke them to pieces. 35 Then the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold were all broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and a strong wind carried them away so that no place was found for them; and the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth. 36 This is the dream; now I will tell its interpretation before the king. 37 You, O king, are a king of kings; for the God of heaven has given you a mighty kingdom and honor. 38 And every country in which men dwell, the fowls of the air and the beasts of the field, he has placed under your authority, and has made you ruler over them all. You are the head of gold. 39 And after you shall arise another kingdom inferior to you, and a third kingdom of brass, which shall rule over all the earth. 40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron; for just as iron hammers and breaks everything in pieces, so shall it break and conquer every kingdom. 41 And whereas you saw the feet and toes, part of potter’s clay and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it some of the strength of iron, just as you saw the iron mixed with miry clay. 42 And as for the toes of the feet which you saw, part of iron and part of clay, so some parts of the kingdom shall be strong and some parts weak. 43 And whereas you saw iron mixed with miry clay, so they shall mix themselves with one another in marriage; but they shall not cleave one to another, just as iron does not mix with clay. 44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up an everlasting kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and bring to an end all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. 45 Forasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God has made known to you what shall come to pass in the latter days. The dream is true, and its interpretation is sure.""
46 ¶ Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer incense and sacrifices to him. 47 The king answered Daniel and said, Truly, your God is the God of gods and the LORD of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery. 48 Then the king advanced Daniel’s rank and gave him a great many gifts and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon and appointed him chief over all the generals of the armies and over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 Then Daniel requested of the king, and he appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the affairs of the province of Babylon; but Daniel himself remained in the king’s gate.""
3:1 ¶ NEBUCHADNEZZAR the king made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits and its breadth six cubits; and he set it up in the plain of Dora, in the province of Babylon. 2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the generals of the armies, the lords, the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. 3 Then all the generals of the armies, the lords, the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces were gathered together to the dedication of the new image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood up before the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 4 Then a herald cried aloud, and said, To you it is commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages, 5 That at the hour when you hear the sound of the trumpet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the golden image which Nebuchadnezzar the king has set up; 6 And whosoever does not fall down and worship shall at the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. 7 Therefore at the hour when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the flute, the harp, the sackbut, the psaltery, and all kinds of music, all the peoples, the nations, and the languages fell down and worshipped the golden image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.""
8 ¶ And at that very time certain Chaldeans came near and accused the Jews. 9 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live for ever! 10 You, O king, have made a decree, that every man who shall hear the sound of the trumpet, the flute, the harp, the sackbut, the psaltery, and all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image which you have set up; 11 And whosoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. 12 There are certain Jews whom you have appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; these men, O king, have not regarded you; they do not serve your god, nor do they worship the golden image which you have set up. 13 Then King Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. And they brought them before the king. 14 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king spoke and said to them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you do not serve my god nor worship the golden image which I have set up? 15 Now if you are ready, at the time you hear the sound of the trumpet, the flute, the harp, the sackbut, the psaltery, and all kinds of music, to fall down and worship the image which I have made, good; but if you do not worship, you shall at once be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is your god that shall deliver you out of my hands? 16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to King Nebuchadnezzar, There is no use to answer you concerning this matter; 17 For there is our God whom we serve, he is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. 18 Then the king shall know that we will not serve your god nor worship the golden image which you have set up.""
19 ¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was filled with fury, and the countenance of his face was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; and he commanded that the furnace should be heated seven times more than it was customarily heated. 20 And he commanded some of the mighty men in the army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 21 Then the mighty men bound them in their trousers, their undergarments, their robes, and their hats, and cast them into the fiery furnace. 22 Because the king’s command was hasty and the furnace was exceedingly hot, the flames of the fire killed those who had accused Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. 23 But the three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. (And they rose up and walked bound in the midst of the flame, praising God and blessing the LORD.) 24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was alarmed and rose up in a great fear, and spoke and said to his princes, Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said to the king, True, O king. 25 The king answered and said, Behold I see men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like that of the Son of God. 26 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king drew near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace, and spoke and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the most High God, come forth and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, came out of the midst of the fiery furnace. 27 And all the people, generals of the armies, governors, lords, and the great men of the king, being gathered together, saw these men upon whose bodies the fire had no power nor was the hair of their head singed neither were their trousers burned nor had the smell of fire passed on them.""
28 ¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar spoke and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have rejected the king’s word and offered their bodies that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God. 29 Therefore I make this decree: Every people, nation, and language which speaks blasphemy against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be plundered, because there is no other God that can deliver in this manner. 30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in the province of Babylon.""
4:1 ¶ THEN Nebuchadnezzar the king wrote to all peoples, nations and languages that dwelt in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you. 2 I thought it good to publish the signs and wonders that the High God has wrought toward me. 3 How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.""
4 ¶ I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house and at ease in my palace; 5 I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the visions of my head troubled me. 6 Therefore I made a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. 7 Then came in before me the magicians, the astrologers, the soothsayers, and the Chaldeans; and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known to me the interpretation thereof; 8 Until Daniel came before me, whose name is Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and before him I told the dream, saying, 9 O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and no mystery is hidden from you, this is the vision of my dream that I have seen; tell me the interpretation thereof. 10 These were the visions which I saw in my bed: I saw, and behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great. 11 The tree grew high, and was strong, and its height reached to heaven and the view thereof to the end of all the earth. 12 Its leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant; and in it was food for all; the beasts of the field dwelt under it, and the fowls of the air rested in its boughs, and all flesh was fed from it. 13 I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and behold, a holy angel came down from heaven, 14 And cried aloud and spoke thus: Hew down the tree and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves and scatter its fruit; let the beasts get away from under it and the fowls of the air from its branches; 15 Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth; but it shall be bound with a band of iron and brass in the green grass of the field; and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his dwelling be with the beasts of the field in the grass of the earth; 16 Let his heart be changed from man’s, and let a beast’s heart be given to him; and let seven seasons change over him. 17 This decree is by the command of the angel at the request of the Holy One to the intent that the living may know that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomsoever he will, and appoints over it the lowest of men. 18 This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, have seen. Now you, O Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation thereof, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you, Daniel, are able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.""
19 ¶ Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was confused for an hour and his thoughts troubled him. The king spoke and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream or the interpretation thereof trouble you. Daniel answered and said, My lord, may the dream be to those who hate you and the interpretation thereof to your enemies. 20 The tree which you saw, which grew and was strong, whose height reached to the heaven and the view thereof, to all the earth; 21 Whose leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all flesh; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the air rested, and from it fed all flesh; 22 It is you, O king; for you have grown and become strong; you have grown high and reach to the heavens, and your dominion is to the end of the earth. 23 And whereas the king saw a holy angel coming down from heaven, crying aloud and saying, Hew clown the tree and destroy it; but leave the stump and the roots thereof in the earth and let it be bound with a band of iron and brass in the green grass of the field; and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his dwelling be with the beasts of the field in the grass of the earth; and let his heart be changed from man’s, and let a beast’s heart be given to him till seven seasons change over him. 24 This is the interpretation, O king: The decree of the Most High has come against my lord the king; 25 They shall drive you away from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you to eat grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven seasons shall change over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomsoever he will. 26 And whereas he commanded to spare the stump and the tree roots, your kingdom shall be sure to you after you have learned that authority is from heaven. 27 Wherefore, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and get rid of your sins by means of almsgiving, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the weak, till your transgressions are removed from you.""
28 ¶ All of these things came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of twelve months King Nebuchadnezzar was walking on the roof of his royal palace which is in Babylon. 30 And he spoke and said, Is not this great Babylon that I have built for the seat of my kingdom and for my great dominion and my majesty? 31 While the word was in the king’s mouth, there came a voice from heaven, saying, O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken; for your kingdom is departed from you. 32 And they shall drive you from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; they shall make you to eat grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven; and seven seasons shall change over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men and gives it to whomsoever he will, and he appoints the lowest of men over it. 33 The same hour the word was fulfilled upon King Nebuchadnezzar; and he was driven from among men, and did eat grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair grew like eagles’ feathers and his nails like bird’s claws.""
34 ¶ And when the days were fulfilled, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my sense was restored to me, and I blessed the Most High and I praised and glorified him who lives for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion and whose kingdom is from generation to generation; 35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reckoned as nothing in his presence; and he does as he pleases with the hosts of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can resist his hand or say to him, What doest thou? 36 At the same time my sense returned to me, and my princes and my generals sought me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added to me. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are true and his ways just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble.""
5:1 ¶ BELSHAZZAR the king made a great feast to a thousand of his princes, and drank wine in the presence of the thousand. 2 And Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem, that the king and his princes, his wives and his concubines might drink out of them. 3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of God which was at Jerusalem, and the king and his princes, his wives and his concubines drank out of them. 4 They drank wine and praised the gods of gold and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone. 5 n that very hour there appeared the fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote opposite the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace, and the king saw the palm of the man’s hand that wrote. 6 Then the king’s countenance was changed and his thoughts troubled him and the joints of his loins were loosed and his knees struck one against another. 7 Then the king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, the soothsayers, and the wise men. And the king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing and show me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall rule over a third of the kingdom. 8 Then came in all the king’s wise men; but they could not read the writing nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof. 9 Then King Belshazzar was greatly troubled and his countenance changed and his princes were bewildered.""
10 ¶ Now the queen, because of the conversation of the king and his princes, came into the banquet house, and she spoke and said to the king, O king, live for ever; let not your thoughts trouble you nor let your countenance be changed; 11 There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father light and understanding and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods were found in him; so that King Nebuchadnezzar your father appointed him master of the magicians, astrologers, soothsayers, and the Chaldeans 12 Because of his spiritual power, knowledge, and understanding which he possesses, to interpret the dreams, devise proverbs, and solve riddles, even Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar. Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation. 13 Then Daniel came in before the king. And the king spoke and said to Daniel, Are you the Daniel of the exiles of Judah whom the king my father brought from Judea? 14 I have heard of you, that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. 15 And now the magicians and the astrologers have been brought in before me, that they might read this writing and make known to me the interpretation thereof; but they could not show me the interpretation of the thing; 16 And I have heard of you, that you can make interpretations and solve riddles. Now if you can read this writing and make known to me the interpretation thereof, you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold about your neck, and shall rule over a third of the kingdom. 17 Then Daniel answered and said to the king, Let your gifts be to yourself, and give the honor of your house to others; but the writing I will read to the king, and make known to him the interpretation. 18 O king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom and majesty and honor and glory. 19 And because of the greatness that he gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him; for whom he would he slew, and whom he would he kept alive, and whom he would he promoted, and whom he would he humbled. 20 But when his heart was lifted up and his pride increased, he was deposed from his kingly throne and his glory passed away from him; 21 And he was driven from among men; and his heart became like that of the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses; they fed him with grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair grew like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws till he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men and that he gives it to whom he pleases and he appoints over it the weakest among men. 22 And you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all these things; 23 But have lifted up yourself against the LORD of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your princes, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine out of them; and you have praised the gods of gold and silver, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which neither see nor hear nor know; and the God in whose hands is your breath and all your ways, you have not glorified nor honored. 24 Then the palm of the hand was sent from his presence; and this writing was written. 25 And this is the writing that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. 26 This is the interpretation of the words: MENE, God has numbered your kingdom and brought it to an end. 27 TEKEL, You are weighed in the balances and found wanting. 28 PERES, Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians. 29 Then commanded King Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold about his neck and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be a ruler over a third of the kingdom.""
30 ¶ In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was slain. 31 And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.""
6:1 ¶ IT pleased Darius to appoint over the kingdom a hundred and twenty generals to be over his whole kingdom; 2 And over them three presidents, of whom Daniel was one, that the generals might give account to them, so that they might not trouble the king. 3 Then Daniel excelled above all the presidents and generals, because he was more spiritual; and the king thought to set him over his whole kingdom. 4 Then the governors and generals sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the affairs of the kingdom; but they could find no fault or occasion because he was faithful to his God, neither were they able to find any blame or charge against him. 5 Then these men said, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel unless we find it against him in connection with the law of his God.""
6 ¶ Then the governors and the generals came before the king, and said to him, King Darius, live for ever! 7 All the governors of the kingdom, the princes, the generals, and the lords have consulted together to establish a royal statute and to make a firm decree that whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, except of you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions. 8 Now, O king, establish this decree and let it be put in writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be altered. 9 Then King Darius signed the writing and issued the decree. 10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house, and the windows of his chamber were open toward Jerusalem; he knelt upon his knees three times a day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done before.""
11 ¶ Then these men spied, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God. 12 And they came near and said before the king, O king, live for ever! Did you not decree and sign, O king, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man within thirty days, except of you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The decree is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be altered. 13 Then they answered and said before the king, Daniel, who is of the exiles from Judea, has not regarded you, O king, nor the decree which you have made, but he makes his petition three times a day. 14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was very much grieved, and made up his mind to deliver Daniel; and he labored till the going down of the sun to deliver him. 15 But these men prevailed over the king, and said to him, Know, O king, that there is a law of the Medes and Persians that every edict and decree which the king establishes may not be changed. 16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel and cast him into the den of lions. And the king spoke and said to Daniel, Your God whom you serve continually, he will deliver you. 17 And they brought a large stone and laid it upon the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet and with the signet of his princes, so that the sentence might not be changed concerning Daniel.""
18 ¶ Then the king went to his palace and passed the night fasting; no food was brought before him, and his sleep departed from him. 19 Then the king arose in the morning early and went in haste to the den of lions. 20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a loud voice to Daniel, and the king spoke and said to Daniel. O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God whom you serve continually been able to deliver you from the lions? 21 Then Daniel spoke to the king and said, O king, live for ever! 22 My God has sent his angel and has shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not hurt me, because I was innocent before him; and also before you, O king, I have committed no offense. 23 Then the king was exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God. 24 And the king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, they, their wives, and their children; and before they reached the bottom of the den, the lions pounced upon them and broke all their bones in pieces.""
25 ¶ Then King Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth, Peace be multiplied to you. 26 I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel; for he is the living God and endures for ever, and his kingdom shall not be destroyed and his dominion shall be even to the end. 27 He saves and rescues and delivers and performs signs and wonders in heaven and on earth, for he has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions. 28 So Daniel was promoted during the reign of Darius and during the reign of Cyrus the Persian.""
7:1 ¶ IN the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream and the visions of his head as he lay upon his bed; then he wrote the dream and told the sum of the matter. 2 Daniel spoke and said, I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven stirred up the great sea. 3 And four great beasts came up out of the sea, differing one from another. 4 The first was like a lion and had eagle’s wings; I beheld till its wings were plucked off, and it rose up from the ground and stood upon its feet like a man, and a man’s heart was given to it. 5 And the second beast was like a bear, and it stood up on one side, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and they said thus to it: Arise, devour much flesh. 6 After these things I beheld, and lo, another beast, like a leopard, which had upon its sides four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads, and dominion was given to it. 7 After these things I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and mighty and exceedingly strong, and it had great iron teeth; it devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet; and it was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. 8 And I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another little horn before which three of the first horns were plucked up from before it; and behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.""
9 ¶ Then I beheld, and 1o, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of days did sit; his garment was white as snow and the hair of his head like the pure wool; his throne was like a fiery flame, and its wheels were like burning fire. 10 A stream of fire issued and came forth from before him; a thousand thousands ministered to him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the judge was seated and the books were opened. 11 I beheld, and 1o, the beast was slain and its body destroyed and given to the burning flame. 12 As for the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away, yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. 13 I saw in the night visions, and behold, one like the Son of man came upon the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him before him. 14 And there was given him dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom is one that shall not be destroyed.""
15 ¶ As for me, Daniel, my spirit was grieved in my bed and the visions of my head troubled me. 16 I came near to one of those who ministered and asked of him the truth concerning all these things. And he told me the truth and made me know the interpretation of these things. 17 Then he said to me, These four great beasts which you saw are four kings which shall arise out of the earth. 18 But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess it for ever and ever. 19 Then I wanted to know the truth concerning the fourth beast, which was different from all the others, exceedingly dreadful, whose teeth were of iron and whose nails of brass, which devoured and broke in pieces and stamped the residue with its feet; 20 And concerning the ten horns that were on its head, and the other horn which came up between them, and before which three fell, the horn that had eyes and a mouth that spoke very great things, whose appearance was greater than its fellows. 21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints and prevailed against them, 22 Until the Ancient of days came and gave judgment to the saints of the Most High; and the time came when the saints possessed the kingdom. 23 Thus he said to me: The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon the earth, which shall be greater than all the kingdoms and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down and break it in pieces. 24 And as for the ten horns out of this kingdom, they are ten kings that shall arise and another king shall arise after them; and he shall be greater than the first, and he shall defeat three kings. 25 And he shall speak words against the Most High, and shall plot against the saints of the Most High, and think to change times and laws; and they shall be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time. 26 But when the judge is seated in judgment, they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it to the end of his kingdom. 27 And the dominions and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven shall be given to the holy people of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. 28 Hitherto is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts troubled me greatly and my countenance changed in me; but I kept the matter in my heart.""
8:1 ¶ IN the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after that which appeared to me at the first. 2 And I saw in my vision and it came to pass, I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in my dream that I was standing by the river Abol Ulai. 3 Then I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, there stood before the river Abol a ram which had two horns; and the two horns were high, but one was higher than the other, and the higher one came up last. 4 I saw the ram pushing westward and northward and southward: and no beasts could stand before him, and there was none that could deliver out of his hands; but he did according to his will, and became great. 5 And as I was considering it, behold, a he-goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, without harming the ground, and the he-goat had a prominent horn between his eyes. 6 And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river Abol, and ran against him in the fury of his power. 7 And when he reached the ram, he was furious against him, and struck the ram and broke his two horns; and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground and stamped upon him; and there was none that could deliver the ram out of the hands of the he-goat. 8 Therefore the he-goat became exceedingly great; and when he was strong, his great horn was broken; and there came up four prominent ones under it towards the four winds of heaven. 9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which grew exceedingly great, toward the south and toward the east; 10 And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground and stamped upon them. 11 And it magnified itself even to the prince of the host, and it took away from him the continual sacrifice, and demolished the place of his sanctuary. 12 And a host was given to him against the continual sacrifice by reason of transgression, and the holy thing was cast down to the ground, and the horn went ahead and prospered. 13 Then I heard a saint speaking, and another saint said to that certain saint who spoke, How long shall be the vision concerning the continual sacrifice, and how soon will the iniquity and corruption be over and the holy thing and host be trodden under foot? 14 And he said to him, For two thousand and three hundred days; then righteousness shall prevail.""
15 ¶ And it came to pass when I, Daniel, had seen this vision and sought to understand it, then behold, there stood before me as it were the appearance of a man. 16 And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of Ulai, who called and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision. 17 So he came near where I stood; and when he came, I was afraid and fell upon my face; but he said to me, Understand, O Son of man; for at the time of the end shall be the vision. 18 Now as he was speaking with me, I was in deep sleep on my face toward the ground; but he touched me and set me upright. 19 And he said to me, Behold, I will show you what shall be at the latter end of the indignation; for at the expiration of the time appointed the end shall be. 20 The ram which you saw with two horns represents the kings of Media and Persia. 21 And the he-goat is the king of Greece, and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. 22 And as for the horn that was broken, and there rose four others under it, four kings shall rise up out of the nation, but not by their own power. 23 And at the latter end of their kingdom, when the transgressions are come to an end, a king of fierce countenance who understands riddles shall arise. 24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power; and he shall cause terrible destruction, and shall prosper and cross over and destroy the mighty and the holy people. 25 And through his craft and treachery his dominion shall prosper, and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and suddenly he shall destroy many; and he shall also rise up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be defeated easily. 26 And the vision of the morning and the evening which has been told is true; and as for you, Daniel, keep this vision a secret, for it shall not be for many days. 27 And I, Daniel, trembled and was troubled for some days; then I rose up and did the king’s business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.""
9:1 ¶ IN the first year of Darius, the son of Ahasuerus, a descendant of the Medes who became king over the realm of the Chaldeans, 2 In the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the scriptures the number of the years, seeing that the word of the LORD came to pass which the prophet Jeremiah said, that seventy years would elapse before the desolations of Jerusalem would come to an end. 3 And I lifted up my face before the LORD God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting and with sackcloth and with ashes;""
4 ¶ And I prayed before the LORD my God and made my confession and said, I beseech thee, O LORD, the great and revered God, who keepest the covenant and mercy to them that love him and to them that keep his commandments; 5 We have sinned and have committed iniquity and have done wickedly and have rebelled and have gone astray from thy commandments and thy judgments; 6 Neither have we listened to thy servants the prophets, who spoke in thy name to our kings, our princes and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. 7 O LORD, victory belongs to thee, but shame is ours, as at this day, to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to all Israel that are near and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their iniquity which they transgressed against thee. 8 O LORD, to us belongs shame of faces to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee. 9 To the LORD God belong mercies and forgiveness of sins, for we have rebelled against him; 10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk according to his laws which he set before us by his servants the prophets. 11 Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law and have gone astray and have not obeyed thy voice; therefore thou hast brought upon them the curses and the oaths that are written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned in his presence. 12 And he has confirmed his words which he spoke against us and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil; for under the whole heaven has not been done as has been done upon Jerusalem. 13 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil has come upon us; yet we have not prayed before the LORD our God, that we might repent from our iniquities and understand thy truth. 14 Therefore the LORD has stirred up this evil and brought it upon us; for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he has done, and yet we have not obeyed his voice. 15 And now, O LORD our God, who didst bring thy people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast made thee a name, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly. 16 O LORD, according to all thy righteousness which thou didst toward us, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem and from thy holy mountain, because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, thy people are scattered in every land, and Jerusalem has become a reproach to all peoples. 17 Now therefore, O God, hear the prayer of thy servant and his supplication, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary which is desolate, for thy name’s sake, O LORD. 18 O my God, incline thine ear and hear; open thine eyes and behold our ruined and desolate places and the city which is called by thy name; for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousness, but for thy great mercies. 19 O LORD, hear; O LORD, forgive us; O LORD, hearken and do; delay not for thy own name’s sake, O my God, because thy city and thy people are called by thy name.""
20 ¶ And while I was yet praying and confessing my offenses and the offenses of my people Israel and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God, 21 Yea, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision before, came from heaven, flying swiftly, and drew near me at the time of the evening sacrifice. 22 And he came and talked to me and said to me, O Daniel, I am now come forth to instruct you, so that you might understand. 23 At the beginning of your prayer, the word came forth and I have come to make it known to you; for you are greatly beloved; therefore discern the matter and understand the vision. 24 Seventy times seven weeks are determined upon your people and upon your holy city, to finish the transgressions and to make an end of sins and for the forgiveness of the iniquity and to bring in everlasting righteousness and to fulfill the vision of the prophets and to give the most holy to Messiah. 25 Know therefore and understand that from the going forth of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of the Messiah the king shall be seven times seven weeks, and sixty-two times seven weeks; the people shall return and build Jerusalem, its streets, and its broad ways at the end of the appointed times. 26 After sixty-two times seven weeks, Messiah shall be slain, and the city shall be without a ruler; and the holy city shall be destroyed together with the coming king; and the end thereof shall be a mass exile, and at the end of the war, desolations are determined. 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for seven weeks and half of seven weeks, then he shall cause the sacrifice and gift offerings to cease, and upon the horns of the altar the abomination of desolation; and the desolation shall continue until the end of the appointed time; the city shall remain desolate.""
10:1 ¶ IN the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed to Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, but the thing and the vision were discerned and understood with great difficulty. 2 In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three times seven weeks of days. 3 I ate no dainty food, neither meat nor wine entered into my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till fully three times seven weeks of days were fulfilled. 4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river Euphrates. 5 I lifted up my eyes and looked, and behold, a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with glory and majesty. 6 His appearance was peculiar, and there is nothing like it; and his face as the appearance of lightning and his eyes as lamps of fire and his arms and his feet like the color of burnished brass and the sound of his words like the sound of many armies. 7 And I, Daniel, alone saw this vision; for the men who were with me did not see the vision; but a great fear fell upon them, so they fled because of the fear. 8 Wherefore I was left alone and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me; and my heart trembled, and there was no strength in me. 9 And when I heard the sound of his words, I fell down upon my face on the ground;""
10 ¶ And behold, a hand touched me and set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands. 11 And he said to me, Arise, O Daniel, O man greatly beloved; understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright; for now I have been sent to you. And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up trembling. 12 Then he said to me. Fear not, Daniel; for from the first day that you did set your heart to comprehend so that you might stand before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come in response to your words. 13 The ruler of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; but 1o, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there against the wishes of the ruler of Persia. 14 Now I have come to let you know what shall befall your people in the latter days; for yet the vision is for the end of the days appointed. 15 And when he had spoken these words to me, I set my face towards the ground and was speechless. 16 And behold, one resembling a man touched my lips; then I opened my mouth and spoke and said to him who stood before me, O my LORD, by the vision my heart trembled and I was unable to rise. 17 For how can the servant of my lord talk with this my lord? For, behold, there is no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me. 18 Then again the one whose appearance was like that of a man touched me and strengthened me, 19 And said, O man greatly beloved, fear not; peace be to you; have courage, be strong. And when he had spoken to me, I was strengthened and said, Let my lord speak; for I have been strengthened. 20 Then he said to me, Do you know why I have come to you? And now I will return to fight with the ruler of Persia; and when I went out, lo, the ruler of Greece came. 21 But I will show you that which is noted in the scripture of truth; and there is none to help me in these things but Michael your prince and myself.""
11:1 ¶ IN the first year of Darius the Mede, the angel stood up to encourage and strengthen me. 2 And he said, Now I will show you the truth. Behold, there shall arise yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than all of them; and when he has become powerful in his own country, he shall stir up all the kingdoms of Greece. 3 And a mighty king shall arise, and he shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will. 4 And when he has risen, his kingdom shall be broken and shall be scattered toward the four winds of heaven; but it will not extend to its former borders nor according to his dominion which he ruled; for his kingdom shall be uprooted, and there shall be no kingdoms beside the divisions of this kingdom.""
5 ¶ land the king of the south and his princes shall be strong, and the people shall follow him, and he shall rule over a great dominion. 6 And after some years they shall come to an agreement, and the daughter of the king of the south shall come to the king of the north to make peace between them; but she will be unable to achieve her purpose because of fear; and she shall surrender together with those who had brought her, her maids, and her allies at that time. 7 But an heir from his posterity shall rise over his land, and he shall come with an army and might against the king of the north, and he shall deal against them, and shall prevail. 8 And he shall also carry away captive into Egypt their idols, with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and he shall rise up against the king of the north once or twice. 9 Then the king of the south shall invade the fortified cities of the king of the north, but he shall return to his own land. 10 But his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces; and they shall attack him and sweep through the land, and shall return destroying as far as his fortifications. 11 And the king of the south shall be enraged, and shall come forth to fight with the king of the north; and the king of the north shall raise a great army, but the army shall be given into his enemy’s hand. 12 And when his enemy has destroyed the army, his heart shall be exalted; and he shall destroy many men, but he shall not prevail. 13 For the king of the north shall return and raise an army twice the size of the former, and shall come after certain years with a great army and with a strong cavalry. 14 And at that time many shall rise against the king of the north; also the wicked men of your own people shall exalt themselves to fulfil the vision; but they shall be overthrown. 15 So the king of the north shall come and set up ramparts and take the most strongly fortified cities; and the arms of the south shall not withstand, because they have no strength to withstand, and the chosen ones of the people shall rise up, but they cannot resist because they have no strength to withstand. 16 But he who comes against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him; and he shall invade the land of Israel, and it shall be delivered into his hands. 17 Then he shall set his face to invade the fortified places of all kingdoms, and all the people who are with him shall advance; and a daughter of men shall be given to him so that she might destroy him, but it shall not prosper, nor shall he take her to himself. 18 After this he shall turn his face to the islands, and shall conquer many; and he shall do away with a ruler who had reproached him, and return his reproach to him. 19 Then he shall turn his face toward the fortified places of the earth; but he shall be overthrown and fall, and shall not be found. 20 Then shall rise up in his place a weak ruler and a vassal of the kingdoms; but within a short time he shall be destroyed, neither in anger nor in battle.""
21 ¶ And in his place shall rise up a vile person, to whom they shall not bestow the royal honor; but he shall come suddenly and seize the kingdom by fraud. 22 And the fortified cities in the provinces shall be plundered, and shall scatter before him even the high priests of the covenant. 23 And some of those who will make a league with him shall work deceitfully against him. 24 And yet he shall become strong, and ally himself with a small people and with the rich cities; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers; he shall carry away prey and spoil and riches; yea, and he shall devise plots against their provinces. 25 And for a time he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great and mighty army; and the king of the south shall be provoked to battle with a very great army; and he shall become exceedingly strong, but he shall not stand; for they shall devise plots against him. 26 Yea, those who eat of his delicacies shall destroy him, and his army shall be scattered; and many shall fall down slain. 27 And both these kings’ hearts shall be bent to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but they shall not prosper because the end shall come at the time appointed. 28 Then he shall return to his own land with a great army; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; 29 And he shall do as at the former time, even so in the latter time. 30 For the hosts of China shall come against him; and they shall defeat him, and he shall return, and have indignation against the holy covenant; he shall have an understanding with those who had forsaken the holy covenant. 31 And their forces shall rise from among themselves, and they shall pollute the mighty sanctuary and shall do away with the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that makes desolate. 32 And those who act wickedly against the covenant shall he condemn; but the people who know their God shall be strong. 33 And the righteous men among the people shall teach many; yet they shall fall by the sword and by fire, by captivity and by spoil, for a thousand days. 34 Now when they fall, they shall receive a little help; but many other hardships shall be added to them by means of deception. 35 And some of the wise men shall fall, to test them and to discern, even to the time of the end; for there is a long period before the appointed time is to come. 36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak great vain things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation is accomplished; for that which is determined shall be done. 37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers nor the desire of women, nor regard any god; for he shall magnify himself above all things. 38 But in his estate shall he honor the mighty God; and a god whom his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, and with precious stones and pleasant things. 39 He shall invade the strong provinces, fighting against strange gods, that he may see the victory and rule over many people, and he shall divide the land and sell it for a price. 40 And at the time of the end the king of the south shall fight against him; and the king of the north shall march against him with chariots and with horsemen and with many ships; and he shall invade the land. 41 He shall reach also the land of Israel, and many people shall be slain; but these shall be delivered out of his hands, even Edom and Moab and the remnant of the children of Ammon. 42 He shall stretch forth his hand also against other countries; and the land of Egypt shall not escape from his hands. 43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; and the Lybians and the Ethiopians shall be his allies. 44 But rumors from the east and from the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy and to slay many. 45 And he shall pitch his royal tent in a plain between the sea and the mountain; and he shall guard the holy place; and the time of his end shall come, and none shall help him.""
12:1 ¶ AND at that time shall Michael arise, the great angel who has charge over your people; and there shall be a time of trouble such as never has been like it since the beginning of the world; and at that very time some of your people shall be delivered, every one whose name shall be found written in the book. 2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 And those who have done good and the men of understanding shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and those who have turned many to righteousness shall shine and stand like stars for ever and ever. 4 But you, O Daniel, seal these words and be silent, and seal this book even to the time of the end; many shall want to know the end, and knowledge shall be increased.""
5 ¶ Then I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two other angels stood one on this side of the bank of the river and the other on that side. 6 And they said to the man clothed in costly array who stood above the waters of the river, How long shall it be till the end of these things? 7 And I heard the man clothed in costly array who stood above the waters of the river. He held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by him who lives for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and a half a time; and when holy people are delivered, all these things shall be fulfilled. 8 And I, Daniel, heard something, but I did not understand; then I said, O my lord, what shall come after these things? 9 And he said, Go your way, Daniel; for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. 10 Many shall be chosen and made white and tried; but the sinners shall continue to sin; and none of the wicked shall understand; but those who have done good works shall understand. 11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be abolished, and the abomination is given to destruction, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. 12 Blessed is he who waits and reaches to the thousand three hundred and thirty-five days. 13 But as for you, O Daniel, go your way and rest till the end; then you shall arise at your appointed time, at the end of the days."
