. . . To hear Rep. Scott Allen tell it, the maps are tough to give away. Allen, R-Waukesha, wants to scrap a law he says wastes money while leaving lawmakers with a glut of unwanted state highway maps each session. At a time when state lawmakers are clamoring for greater efficiency at the cash-strapped state Department of Transportation, Allens is perhaps the most granular penny-pinching proposal offered yet. State law says the department shall give 500 highway maps the folded paper kind to the office of all 132 state lawmakers each time theyre published. Another 300 must be given to the Legislatures nonpartisan reference bureau. Each lawmaker also must get 50 copies of large laminated wall maps of the state highway system. Allen has asked fellow lawmakers to sign on to a prospective bill to end those requirements. The general public still could obtain the maps at rest stops or their local DMV, or by requesting a copy from their local lawmaker, Allen said. While paper maps are nostalgic, they are no longer a worthwhile use of taxpayer dollars. The Legislature should do its part in keeping DOT costs low, Allens co-sponsorship memo to lawmakers read. In an age when many people use smartphones for navigation, Allen says the maps arent exactly a hot commodity. Its difficult to get people to take these maps, Allen said. The DOT says it has been printing highway maps since 1918. The law requiring they be distributed to lawmakers was established in 1979, according to the Legislative Reference Bureau. The department says about $20,000 would be saved every other year from not printing the maps for lawmakers and the reference bureau. More potential savings could come from no longer needing to distribute them, Allen said. Thats hardly a blip in the states $76 billion budget. But Allen, among a group of conservative lawmakers who are particularly focused on DOT spending, said no sum is too meager to consider. We shouldnt let any small dollar amount go un-scrutinized, Allen said. 1st diesel locomotive from General Electric arrives, work on track in Bihar factory India oi-PTI New Delhi, October 13: The first diesel-electric locomotive to the Indian Railways has arrived. The locomotive was built US conglomerate General Electric as part of a USD 2.5 billion deal to supply 1,000 such engines to the Indian Railways. The project, a joint venture between the Indian Railways and GE to supply and maintain modern diesel-electric locomotives of 4,500 HP and 6,000 HP to the public transporter, was announced in November 2015. GE clarified that the work on a diesel locomotive factory in Bihar's Marhowrah is on track, days after Railway Minister Piyush Goyal ruled out any changes in the deal. But with government's thrust on electrification of tracks to combat pollution, there was a buzz, and some media reports that it could exit the contract. "The first of 1,000 diesel-electric evolution series locomotives has already arrived at India's Mundra Port," Vishal Wanchoo, President and CEO, GE South Asia told PTI on the sidelines of the International Rail Conference and the 12th edition of the International Rail Equipment Exhibition (IREE) held here today. "The work in our diesel factory in Bihar is on track and as the minister has said there are no changes in the contract," he said, adding GE was actually ahead of schedule. The plan is to deliver 100 locomotives per year on an average. The first fiscal year will be little bit more. We plan to deliver the 1,000 locomotives to the Indian Railways over 11 years, he said. "Our partnership with the Indian Railways is a best-in- class bilateral example of how entities can work together to create jobs and drive economic development in a region," said Wanchoo. "Through this project, we're creating a robust supply chain ecosystem in India, and will localize more than 70 per cent of all content. We're proud of the more than 6,000 jobs that have been created by GE in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, and remain committed to our work in the country," he said. Goyal had last month said there would be no changes in the Marhowrah factory set up. But, the railway minister had also said he had discussions with top executives of GE to explore how the objectives of reducing pollution, bringing down overall cost and honouring agreements with the global conglomerate be met. Wanchoo said GE has no plans to manufacture electric locomotives at the Marhowrah factory. "GE bid for diesel locomotives and our Bihar plant can manufacture only diesel locomotives. Two contracts were floated and we bid for the diesel plant. "However, we support the government's electrification process. In every country that we operate in, we supply these locomotives. Most countries wherein we operate have an electrification program, which makes a lot of sense, but the diesel locomotives also co-exist for various reasons as they are efficient and affordable," Wanchoo said. The incident took place at the Central Jail at Parapana Agrahara in Bengaluru. The constable, Dinesh was part of the city's armed reserve force. The jail authorities have registered a case against him under Section 424 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 42 of the Prisons Act. The Congress led by Ashok Chavan outdid itself winning 73 of the 81 seats in the Nanded-Waghala Municipal Corporation. The message was loud and clear, the BJP is not invincible, especially when Congress' traditional votes that had strayed have returned to the party. While the Congress had the advantage of home turf, considering that the constituency is Ashok Chavan's own bastion, the BJP's performance in the previous elections especially in the last one year, was a cause of worry. The BJP won six seats- four more than what it had managed in the last elections. The Congress intended to send the BJP packing but what it ended up doing was burying the Shiv Sena as well as the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Shiv sena won one seat while the AIMIM failed to open an account. "Traditional Congress votes have returned to the party, especially Muslim votes. The results are overwhelming," said a Congress leader from Maharashtra. The Congress had previously won 41 out of the 81 seats, a simple majority. This time around, the results have exceeded expectations of the party in the face of heavy politicking and campaigning by the BJP led by none other than 'electoral victory poster boy' Devendra Fadnavis. The Shiv Sena, despite a humiliating defeat in the polls, seemed happier about the drubbing that BJP received. "The results must have been a shocker for our friend, which saw the dream of a Congress-free India. The message for India through this election is clear the BJP can be defeated," Shiv Sena said in its mouthpiece Saamna. The Congress called the results a "slap on the face for BJP and its poaching politics". Nanded had turned into a battle of prestige between Fadnavis and Chavan and now the message is loud and clear. The Congress has not only managed to defend its bastion but has proved to the BJP that the right wing party is not invincible. OneIndia News For Breaking News and Instant Updates Allow Notifications Story first published: Friday, October 13, 2017, 19:39 [IST] It was a story with all the makings of a heartwarming family flick: a heartless owner throws a cute puppy off a bridge into a river, but the brave pup somehow manages to swim shore, where a good Samaritan finds him and turns him over to the Humane Society. The story went viral when it was shared by the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin on their Facebook page, racking up more than 64,000 views, 2,800 shares, 500 comments and 1,600 reactions by Friday afternoon. The story also caught the attention of several television news outlets, who reported on the poor puppy's plight and the search for the heartless person who tried to drown him. There was just one problem with the story: it wasn't true. Janesville police said Friday that the story was fabricated so the man who owned the 10-month-old terrier mix wouldn't have to pay the $75 surrender fee to the Humane Society animal shelter. "Since (the incident) was never originally reported to police, an officer obtained the name of the person who turned the dog in and told the story of the puppy being thrown into the river," said Sgt. Dean Sukus of the Janesville Police Department. "After interviewing that person and other members of the household, it was discovered the story was a fabrication to avoid paying a fee to the Humane Society to surrender the dog." The dog's owner faces no criminal charges since the dog wasn't actually harmed and the owner only reported the false story to the Humane Society and not the police, Sukus said. Brett Frazier, the executive director for the Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin, said it's not all that unusual for pet owners to come in with a story to try to avoid the shelter's fee, but this one was among the more creative stories he's heard. "If it didn't have so many details it probably would have raised some flags," he said. But, he added, "we take in 3,000 pets every years. If we ran every person through the ringer and put them under the bright lights, that's all we'd do." The $75 fee covers the shelter's costs for taking in pets and making sure they're healthy, but the shelter is always working with people who say they can't afford the cost but still need to find a new home for their animal, Frazier said. Fewer than 300 people surrendered pets to the Janesville Humane Society in 2016, while more than 2,500 other stray animals made their way through the shelter doors over the course of that year. As for the unnamed puppy with the unusual backstory, Frazier says he's going to be just fine. Since the Facebook post went online, more than 100 people have expressed interest in giving him a new home. However, the same isn't necessarily true for the other animals in the shelter who need homes just as much, he added. "Remember that there are hundreds or thousands of pets (in animal shelters) ... who maybe don't have a crazy story, but still need help." The celebrations kickstart with 'Dhanteras', the auspicious day on which people buy utensils, silver ware or gold. It is believed that new "Dhan" or some form of precious metal bought on this auspicious day is a sign of good luck and prosperity. Choti Diwali follows next, which involves preparations for the Badi Diwali. People start decorating their houses with lights, and hold get-togethers. The next day is celebrated as Badi Diwali, the main festive day which is on 19th October 2017. On this day, people perform laxmi puja, visit each other's houses with sweets and gifts, burn fire crackers and spend time with their family and friends. The day after Diwali is celebrated as Govardhan Puja and finally the five-day celebration comes to an end with Bhai Dooj where sisters apply tilak on their brother's forehead and siblings pray for each other's well-being. Diwali 2017 or Deepavali Significance: Diwali marks the homecoming of Lord Rama with his wife Sita and brother Laxmana to his kingdom Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. Lord Rama who left for his 'Vanvaas', following his father King Dasharat's command, spent 14 years wandering in the forests and villages of India. Towards the end of his exile, Sita is abducted by the ten-headed king of Lanka Ravana who disguises himself as a Yogi as asks Sita for 'Bhiksha' (offerings). While handing it over to him, Sita crosses the Laxman-Rekha drawn by Ram's younger brother Laxman and Ravana is able to capture her. Lord Ram, on hearing this, launches a war against the army of Ravana and reaches Lanka to fight Ravana and bring his wife back. The victory of Lord Rama in the epic battle of Ramayana symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Diwali 2017, festival of lights: It is believed that when the news of Lord Ram returning to his homeland reached Ayodhya, the entire city was lit with thousands of oil lamps (diyas) and decorated with flowers and beautiful rangolis. Since then, Diwali has been known as the festival of lights. In order to welcome, Lord Ram into their homes people decorate their houses with oil lamps, which is why the festival is also called 'Deepavali'. The tradition of lighting oil lamps symbolizes the victory of good over evil. People also make preparations to welcome Goddess Lakshmi by drawing beautiful rangolis, and Paduka (footsteps) on the entrance of their houses. In Bengal, people conduct the Kali puja on the Diwali day which takes place overnight. There is also a tradition of distributing sweets and dry fruits to friends, relative and neighbours to celebrate the festival of Diwali. Kaju Katli, Besan Laddoo and Soan Papdi are some of the most common sweets enjoyed during Diwali. Chief Election Commissioner A K Jyoti has now claimed that the delay in the announcement was keeping in mind the state's welfare. The Congress has accused the Narendra Modi government of pressuring the Election Commission to defer the announcement so that the center can announce sops for voters in Gujarat. A K Jyoti has now said that the delay in announcing the Gujarat dates was to ensure the state did not have to endure a long period under the model code of conduct. "There is no justification to have a prolonged period of the imposition of model code of conduct as it could hamper development work," CEC Jyoti said. He added that the Gujarat government had told the Commission that it needed time to complete relief work before the model code is enforced. Gujarat had been marred by floods and heavy rains which led to massive criticism of the state government. A K Jyoti quoted a precedent in 2001 when the law ministry and the EC had reached an understanding not to allow a gap of more than 21 days between the announcement of polls and date of notification for elections. With this effectively, A K Jyoti said, the model code will be in place for 46 days. He said in the past when elections to Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh were announced together, the model code remained enforced for 86 days. "Loudspeakers were never part of any of the religions whether it is Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism or Zoroastrianism. "That, as loudspeakers is not part of/intrinsic to any of the religions as all religions are 4000 to 5000 years old, whereas loudspeaker came into existence in 1924, that is less than 100 years and hence banning loudspeaker will not hit (violate) Article 25 or 26 of the Constitution," he said. The petition also said the use of loudspeakers takes away the right of the citizens to speak with others, their right to read or think or the right to sleep. "There may be heart patients or patients suffering from nervous disorder may be compelled to bear this serious impact of sound pollution which has had an adverse effect on them. Toddlers, kids are equally affected," the plea said. The plea also referred to the landmark judgement of the apex court which declared the Right to Privacy as a Fundamental Right. The plea sought directions to the authorities to remove loudspeakers atop any religious structures saying they violated citizens' rights including those of minors and elderly people. The petition sought a complaint mechanism established and suitable action taken against repeat offenders. Also, a direction to the authorities that after removing the loudspeakers, monitoring is carried out. PTI Places of Worship Act: SC gives more time to Centre to file affidavit by Dec 12 Rohingya case: Court may be approached for an appropriate' interim order, says MHA India oi-Vikas By Vikas The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday said that in case of "contingency" the petitioner in the Rohingya deportation case may move the court for an "appropriate interim order". The Supreme Court earlier on Friday told the centre to strike a balance between national and human interest while hearing the Rohingya case. "While adjourning Rohingyas Deportation Case, the Supreme Court simply recorded the statement of the learned Counsel for the petitioner to the effect that in case of any contingency he may move the Court for appropriate interim order," news agency ANI quoted an MHA spokesperson as saying. "Recording this request and without granting any interim order, the matter was posted for further hearing on November 21, 2017," MHA added. The bench headed by Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra said that national and economic interests are important while dealing with humanitarian issues. The court said that the state should not be oblivious to facts. Meanwhile, senior Supreme Court advocate Aishwarya Bhati said that the bench was clearly of the view that this matter requires a detailed hearing because the magnitude of the issue is much wider. "Initially court felt they would like to pass an interim relief order but ASG stood up and contested...The ASG said this is not even a prayer made by the petitioner," Bhati told ANI. "CJI observed that on one hand, there is humanitarian ground and at the same time there is national security interest," she added. The court posted the matter to November 21. The Bench, however, permitted the petitioner to move any court if any contingent of deportation arises in between. [Strike balance between national and humanitarian interest, SC on Rohingya issue] On the earlier date of hearing, the court had told the government to adopt a humanitarian approach while dealing with the Rohingya Muslim issue. OneIndia News Explained: Why did the ECI freeze the symbol of the Shiv Sena Not just future of Sena but democracy at stake, says Uddhav Six MNS corporators join Shiv Sena, Uddhav calls it ghar wapsi' India oi-Vikas By Vikas In a blow to Raj Thackeray's party, six Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) corporators joined the Shiv Sena on Friday. MNS chief Raj Thackeray has reportedly written to Anti-Corruption Bureau alleging that "a party offered money to its corporators". Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, however, rejected such allegations and said that corporators joining the Shiv Sena was "Ghar Wapsi". Speaking to the media after inducting six MNS corporators, Uddhav rubbished allegations of poaching corporators. He took a jibe at the BJP and said that "such a thing (poaching) had taken place in Arunachal Pradesh and Goa." "People should not level allegations of poaching. If others do it, it amounts to self-respect and if we do it, it becomes betrayal? Poaching took place in Arunachal Pradesh and Goa. What happened today (MNS corporators joining the Sena) was just 'ghar wapsi' (homecoming)," a PTI report quoted Uddhav Thackeray as saying. There were no ulterior motives behind inducting the MNS corporators and it was done only after they expressed their desire to join the Shiv Sena, he said. Uddhav also took a dig at PM Modi and that the 'Modi wave' had waned and that the BJP now relied on "sympathy wave" to win elections. He said the national party gets "stomach ache" if the Shiv Sena becomes politically strong. From being south India's first fully digitized village, Ibrahimpura of Siddipet taluk has gone back to cash transactions. Siddipet district's Ibrahimpur hit national headlines after becoming the first fully cashless village in December last year. Less than a year later, today, the village has gone back to cash transactions. High service charges levied on bank transactions, heavy rentals on POS swipe machines are to blame. Ibrahimpur that used 'cards and electronic payments' for things as simple as an auto ride or buying a snack has gone back to phase 1 with banks levying high charges on digital payments and transaction. Shopkeepers, private finance firms owners, self-help groups had opted for POS machines but have today returned them to Andhra Bank's branch thanks to high rentals. "We have returned our swiping machines to the bank because we had to pay a rental of Rs 1,400 per month. We were expected to pay irrespective of whether we did enough business," said Praveen, a shopkeeper in the village who had very proudly switched to POS swipe machine in December last year. He claims to have lost Rs 10,000 simply as a rental for the machine bringing his profit margins drastically down. From a village that taught even its senior citizens to use a debit card, Ibrahimpur has gone back to 'cash only'. The villagers now say that it was a mistake to shift to a digital mode of payments. "Ours was declared a model village for digital payments but there is no use in making it compulsory," said Yella Reddy, a resident. The Telangana government does not want to lose out its cashless village and has urged the banks to waive charges. The Patna High Court quashed a six-year-old order of a lower court which took cognizance of a complaint against Nasreen. The writer's tweet was neither malicious nor was it made to intentionally disturb any public order, Justice Arun Kumar said in his order yesterday on a petition filed by Nasreen challenging the decision of the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) court at Bettiah in West Champaran district. The CJM court, without conducting a mandatory inquiry under Section 202 of CrPC, took cognisance in the matter, the high court said while quashing the lower court's order. The tweet, which was allegedly made with regard to Muslim women in 2011, was published in a Hindi vernacular. Murad Ali, an advocate at Bettiah civil court, had filed a complaint in the CJM court against Nasreen on October 24, 2011. The CJM court took cognisance of the matter on May 24, 2012 and later issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against the writer. The author, who is living in India in a self-imposed exile, had challenged the CJM's decision through her lawyer Amit Srivastava in the Patna high court which had stayed proceedings and execution of NBW on April 15, 2013. Srivastava said that Murad Ali, the complainant at Bettiah lower court, did not appear in the high court for six hearings including yesterday when the HC passed the order. Nasreen had fled Bangladesh in the early 1990s after right-wing Muslim outfits issued death threats to her. OneIndia News Trend of killing all opposition is dangerous: Bombay HC on murder of Gauri Lankesh India oi-Oneindia By Oneindia Mumbai, Oct 13: As family, friends and supporters of murdered Bengaluru-based veteran journalist Gauri Lankesh are desperately waiting for justice, on Thursday, the Bombay High Court brought into focus the brutal killing of the journalist-activist on September 5. The court without mincing any words stated that the nation is witnessing a "dangerous trend" of eliminating all opposition and liberal values, which is giving the country a bad name, while apparently referring to the killing of Lankesh in Bengaluru. The observation was made by a bench of Justices SC Dharmadhikari and Bharati Dangre while hearing a petition seeking that the court monitor the probes into the killing of rationalists Govind Pansare and Narendra Dabholkar. "There is no respect for liberal values and opinions. People are increasingly being targeted for their liberal principles. Not just thinkers, but any person or organisation that believes in liberal principles can be targeted. It's like if there is some opposition to me, I must have that person eliminated," the court said. "This trend of killing all opposition is dangerous. This is giving a bad reputation to the country," the bench observed. While the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Maharashtra Crime Investigation Department (CID) submitted their probe reports in the Dabholkar and Pansare murders respectively, the bench noted that the progress made by the authorities so far had failed to yield any concrete results. "While your (probe agencies') efforts are genuine, the fact remains that the prime accused are still absconding. And between every adjournment in the case, one more precious life is being lost," the bench said. "One more precious life was lost last month when in an unfortunate incident, a liberal, like-minded person was killed in Bengaluru," the court pointed out. "What's the guarantee that more people will not be targeted for their beliefs and principles in the future? If the accused persons and organisations are feeling emboldened, then the probe agencies should take that as a challenge," the bench said. "The probe agencies should alter their line of investigation, and make use of technology to nab the killers for it is apparent that the accused persons are smart operators. They have organisational backing, funding, technological support, and arms at their disposal," the court noted. The bench was referring to the fact that Sarang Akolkar and Vinay Pawar, the two men identified by the CBI as those who gunned down Dabholkar in 2013, are yet to be traced. The court, however, dismissed the apprehensions of the counsel for the families of Dabholkar and Pansare that the agencies were not probing the role of right wing group Sanatan Sanstha in the killings. "While the court can't make details of the probe public, we can say this much that the probe reports have examined all angles. They have not ignored the possibility of the role of Sanatan Sanstha in the case," the bench said. Dabholkar was shot dead on August 20, 2013, in Pune while on his morning walk. Pansare was shot at on February 16, 2015 in Kolhapur and succumbed to injuries on February 20. The court is hearing petitions filed by the kin Dabholkar and Pansare, urging it to monitor the investigations in both the cases. Lankesh was murdered outside her home while she was returning back from her office at around 8 pm on September 5. Almost the whole nation condemned the incident and protest rallies were hosted in several parts of the country demanding justice for Lankesh. She was a vocal critic of right wing politics. Hemraj Banjade, the second victim, about whom a very few are interested to know, was working as a domestic help in the Talwar family. The Allahabad High Court judgement drew reactions from a cross-section of Twitter users--politicians, actors and commoners. "Don't know who killed #Arushi & will probably never know but what I do know is the police made a total dogs breakfast of the investigation," former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah tweeted. Bollywood actor Kabir Bedi welcomed the verdict that went in favour of the teenage girl's parents, as the court said neither the circumstances nor the evidence was enough to hold them guilty. "ACQUITTED!!! Rajesh and Nupur Talwar not guilty of #Aarushi's murder. Finally, justice prevails, nightmare ends. #AarushiVerdict," he tweeted. International oi-Oneindia By Oneindia Naypyidaw, Oct 13: Now, a debate has started over the number of Rohingyas who have fled their homeland Myanmar to neighbouring Bangladesh since violence erupted in Myanmar's western Rakhine state on August 25. While United Nations (UN) has put the figure of Rohingyas who have left Myanmar at 520,000, Myanmar's military alleged that the media has "exaggerated" the numbers. The media has "exaggerated" the number of Rohingya refugees fleeing an army crackdown, Myanmar's commander-in-chief said on Thursday, in a brash rebuttal of accusations of ethnic cleansing by his forces. Some 520,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar's western Rakhine state since August 25, when the military launched a sweeping campaign against militants from the Muslim minority. The crackdown has been so intense that the UN on Wednesday accused Myanmar of trying to purge its entire Rohingya population. A new UN report released on Wednesday described the army-led crackdown as "well-organised, coordinated and systematic, with the intent of not only driving the population out of Myanmar but preventing them from returning to their homes". Half of Myanmar's Rohingya have bolted over the last seven weeks, fleeing incinerated villages to join what has become the world's largest refugee camp in neighbouring Bangladesh. Recommended Video Rohingya crisis: Is Myanmar ready to take back Rohingyas ? | Oneindia News Thousands more are still trying to escape, massing on beaches and hoping to cross the Naf River before their food runs out. But in a Facebook post on his official page on Thursday, army chief Min Aung Hlaing was unrepentant, describing the military response as proportionate and playing down the scale of the exodus. It is an "exaggeration to say that the number of Bengalis fleeing to Bangladesh is very large," the post quoted him as saying, using a pejorative term for the Rohingya that classifies them as illegal immigrants. Instead, he blamed "instigation and propaganda" by the media, who have become a punching bag for anger inside Myanmar, a Buddhist-majority country where there is little sympathy for the Rohingya. The humanitarian needs of the refugees who have made it to Bangaldesh are immense with limited food, shelter and the threat a disease outbreak deepening by the day. But Min Aung Hlaing, who rights groups say carries personal responsibility for the crisis, insisted the Rohingya are merely returning to their motherland. "The native place of Bengalis is really Bengal," he said. "They might have fled to the other country with the same language, race and culture as theirs by assuming that they would be safer there." He also reiterated the army's view on the contested history of the Rohingya, saying they were moved in from Bangladesh by British colonialists and have no legitimate claim to lineage on Myanmar soil. While immigration increased under British rule, historians say Muslim communities were recorded living in the Rakhine region long before the colonial era. His comments followed a meeting with United States (US) Ambassador Scot Marciel, who according to the post "expressed concern" over the half million refugees and offered to help aid efforts. This week an AFP reporter on a rare government-steered trip to the conflict-hit Rakhine heard testimony from Rohingya villagers who are scared and fast running out of food. They said ethnic Rakhine Buddhist villagers are trying to starve them out of their homes. Authorities are providing supplies to the Rohingya left behind, Min Aung Hlaing, glibbly adding food is plentiful in Rakhine where "fish can easily be caught" in its waterways. Meanwhile, in India the debate over Rohingyas revolves around whether they are refugees or illegal immigrants. The Narendra Modi government in an affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court in September stated its plans to deport the Rohingyas staying in various parts of the country as they pose "security threat". According to estimates, at least 40,000 Rohingya refugees are taking shelter in various parts of India. Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel at the United Nations General Assembly (Image by (Official White House Photo by Shealah Craighead)) Details DMCA Make no mistake: We do not have a crisis over the Iran nuclear deal. It is working and everyone from Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to the U.S. and Israeli intelligence services to the International Atomic Energy Agency agree: Iran is adhering to the deal . But President Trump is about to take a working deal and turn it into a crisis -- an international crisis that very likely can lead to war. While the decertification of the Iran deal that Trump is scheduled to announce on Friday in and of itself doesn't collapse the deal, it does trigger a process that increases the risk of war in the following five ways. If the deal collapses, so do the restrictions on Iran's nuclear program The nuclear deal, or the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) took two very bad scenarios off the table: It blocked all of Iran's paths to a nuclear bomb and it prevented war with Iran. By killing the deal, Trump is putting both of those bad scenarios back on the table. As I describe in my book Losing an Enemy -- Obama, Iran and the triumph of Diplomacy , it was the very real danger of a military conflict that drove the Barack Obama administration to become so dedicated to find a diplomatic solution to this crisis. In January 2012, then-Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta stated publicly that Iran's breakout -- the time it would take from making the decision to build the bomb to having the material for a bomb -- was 12 months. In spite of massive sanctions on Iran aimed at both retarding the nuclear program and convincing the Iranians that the nuclear program was too costly to continue, the Iranians aggressively expanded their nuclear activities. By January 2013, exactly a year later, a new sense of urgency dawned on the White House. Iran's breakout time had shrunk from 12 months to a mere 8-12 weeks. If Iran decided to dash for a bomb, the United States might not have enough time to stop Tehran militarily. According to former CIA deputy director Michael Morell, Iran's shrinking breakout time caused the U.S. to be " closer to war with the Islamic Republic than at any time since 1979 ." Other countries realized the danger as well. "The actual threat of military action was almost felt as electricity in the air before a thunderstorm," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told me. If nothing changed, President Obama concluded, the U.S. would soon face a binary option: Either go to war with Iran (due to pressure from Israel, Saudi Arabia and some elements inside the U.S.) to stop its nuclear program or acquiesce to Iran's nuclear fait accompli. The only way out of this lose-lose situation was a diplomatic solution. Three months later, the U.S. and Iran held a pivotal secret meeting in Oman where the Obama administration managed to secure a diplomatic breakthrough that paved the way for the JCPOA. The deal prevented war. Killing the deal prevents the peace. If Trump collapses the deal and the Iranians restart their program, the U.S. will soon find itself facing the same dilemma that Obama did in 2013. The difference is that the President is now Donald Trump, a man who doesn't even know how to spell diplomacy, let alone conduct it. Trump is planning to take on the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps Decertification is only half the story. Trump also plans to significantly escalate tensions with Iran in the region, including taking a measure that both the Bush and Obama administrations rejected : Designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. Make no mistake, the IRGC is far from an army of saints. It is responsible for much of the repression against the population inside of Iran and it fought the U.S. military indirectly in Iraq through Shia militias. But it has also been one of the most critical fighting forces against ISIS. In real terms, the designation does not add much to the pressure the U.S. already is or can impose on the IRGC. But it ratchets things up in a very dangerous way without any clear benefits to the United States. The drawbacks, however, are crystal clear. IRGC commander Mohammad Ali Jafari issued a stern warning last week : "If the news is correct about the stupidity of the American government in considering the Revolutionary Guards a terrorist group, then the Revolutionary Guards will consider the American army to be like Islamic State [ISIS] all around the world." If the IRGC acts on its warning and targets U.S. troops -- and there are 10,000 such targets in Iraq -- we will only be a few steps away from war. Trump is escalating without having any exit-ramps Escalation is under all circumstances a dangerous game. But it is particularly dangerous when you do not have diplomatic channels that ensure that the other side reads your signals correctly and that provide mechanisms for de-escalation. Not having such exit-ramps is like driving a car without a brake. You can accelerate, you can crash, but you can't brake. Military commanders understand this. That's what former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen warned about prior to the Obama administration investing in diplomacy. "We've not had a direct link of communication with Iran since 1979," Mullen said. "And I think that has planted many seeds for miscalculation. When you miscalculate, you can escalate and misunderstand... We are not talking to Iran, so we don't understand each other. If something happens, it's virtually assured that we won't get it right -- that there will be miscalculation which would be extremely dangerous in that part of the world." (Image by Greg Palast) Details DMCA [Los Angeles] When we were at Francis Polytechnic High in Sun Valley, Steve Paddock and I were required to take electrical shop class. At Poly and our junior high, we were required to take metal shop so we could work the drill presses at the GM plant. We took drafting. Drafting like in "blueprint drawing." Paddock. Palast. We sat next to each other at those drafting tables with our triangular rulers and #2 pencils so we could get jobs at Lockheed as draftsman drawing blueprints of fighter jets. Or do tool-and-dye cutting to make refrigerator handles at GM where they assembled Frigidaire refrigerators and Chevys. But we weren't going to fly the fighter jets. Somewhere at Phillips Andover Academy, a dumbbell with an oil well for a daddy was going to go to Yale and then fly our fighter jets over Texas. We weren't going to go to Yale. We were going to go to Vietnam. Then, when we came back, if we still had two hands, we went to GM or Lockheed. From Gush Shalom Ze'ev Begin, the son of Menachem Begin, is a very nice human being. It is impossible not to like him. He is well brought up, polite and modest, the kind of person one would like to have as a friend. Unfortunately, his political views are far less likeable. They are much more extreme than even the acts of his father. The father, after leading the Irgun, sat down and made peace with Anwar al-Sadat of Egypt. Ze'ev is closer to Golda Me'ir, who ignored Sadat's peace overtures and led us into the disastrous Yom Kippur war. Begin Jr. is a strict follower of the "revisionist" Zionist creed founded by Vladimir Ze'ev Jabotinsky. One of the characteristics of this movement has always been the importance it gave to written texts and declarations. The labor movement, headed by David Ben-Gurion, didn't give a damn about words and declarations and respected only "facts on the ground." Last week, Ze'ev Begin wrote one of his rare articles. Its main purpose was to prove that peace with the Palestinians is impossible, a pipe-dream of Israeli peace-lovers (Haaretz 9.10). Quoting numerous Palestinian texts, speeches and even schoolbooks, Begin shows that the Palestinians will never, never, never give up their "Right of Return." Since such a return would entail the end of the Jewish State, Begin asserts, peace is a pipe dream. There will never be peace. End of story. A SIMILAR point is made by another profound thinker, Alexander Jakobson, in another important article in Haaretz (9.26). It is directed against me personally, and its headline asserts that I am "True to Israel, but Not to the Truth." It accuses me of being tolerant towards the BDS movement, which is out to put an end to Israel. How does he know? Simple: BDS confirms the Palestinians' "Right of Return", which, as everybody knows, means the destruction of the Jewish State. Well, actually I object to BDS for several reasons. The movement to which I belong, Gush Shalom, was the first (in 1997) to declare a boycott of the settlements. Our aim was to separate the Israeli people from the settlements. The BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement, by boycotting all of Israel, achieves the opposite effect: it pushes the Israeli people into the arms of the settlers. I also don't like to call on people to boycott me. But of all the points in the BDS platform, the one that bothers me the least is the demand that the State of Israel recognize the Palestinians' Right of Return. It is simply ridiculous. Not in a thousand years will the BDS compel Israel to do so. So why bother? LET' US FIRST throw some light on the issue. When the British withdrew from Palestine in 1948, there were in the country between the Mediterranean and the Jordan about 1.2 million Arabs and 635,000 Jews. By the end of the war that ensued, some 700,000 Arabs had fled and/or were driven out. It was a war of what was (later) called "ethnic cleansing." Few Arabs were left in the territory conquered by Jewish arms, but it should be remembered that no Jews at all were left in the territory conquered by Arab arms. Fortunately for our side, the Arabs succeeded in occupying only small slices of land inhabited by Jews (such as the Etzion bloc, East Jerusalem et al.), while our side conquered large, inhabited territories. As a combat soldier, I saw it with my own eyes. The Arab refugees multiplied by natural increase, and today number about 6 million. About 1.5 million of them live in the occupied West Bank, about a million in the Gaza Strip, the rest are dispersed in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and all over the world. Would they all come back, if given the opportunity? Let us consider this. Next Page 1 | 2 | 3 (Note: You can view every article as one long page if you sign up as an Advocate Member, or higher). What was once no more than an also-ran party in Canada, National Democratic Party,(NDP), stands poised to pose a threat to the hegemony of the right-of- the-centre ruling Liberal Party at the hustings due in about 18-20 months. This is a big front page news in Canada. Also in India because of the brand of politics the 38-year-old lawyer turned Jagmeet Singh of Indian origin, who has been elevated to lead the party. Well, he is the first non-white to head a political party in Canada, which, at the core, is a very white -- Christian nation, despite its avowed faith in diversity and pluralism. It may be too early to declare that the Jagmeet Party would dislodge the 150-year --old natural ruling party in the 2019 general elections but it is difficult to brush aside the local media hype that the son of Indian migrants is a potential Prime Minister. Founded in 1961, National Democratic Party stands at the third place in the Canadian political sweepstakes. Six years ago in 2011, it emerged as the leading opposition party only to go down the ladder in the next round of ballot. Its fortunes looked bright only between 1972 and 1974 when it shared power as a partner of the ruling coalition at the Federal level. Many commentators are unanimous that the publicity swirling round Jagmeet Singh's elevation does not guarantee NDP the top slot in the next electoral battle. He is known more for his rather flashy sense of fashion; he lacks experience at the national level in general and politics in particular. This may prove to be a hurdle for him. India may like to hope that the glorious uncertainties of politics will not push Jagmeet to the driver's seat. In fact, even the Canadian government, headed by the youthful, 45-year-old Justine Trudeau, may entertain such reservations. For its own reasons anchored in local politics. One thing is clear though. Only a naive star-gazer will say that Canada is ready to accept a 'coloured' Head of State professing an Oriental religion and sporting an 'Osama'-type turban. Such a possibility looks bleak these days as South Asians are regular targets of hate crime; the Sikhs bear the brunt most because they are taken to be 'terrorists' from their "appearance". Moreover, if Canada values good relations with India, Jagmeet with all his smart suits and colourful turbans will not be an automatic choice. His India related views will not help him to contribute much to maintaining strong Canada-India ties. Will he accept the reality that Sikhs are safe in India--certainly much more so than in Canada? Honestly speaking he may not since he has been supporting Khalistanis - Sikh separatists, who want a separate homeland carved out of India. About this a little while later. The ruling Liberal Party also has shown a soft corner for the Sikh separatists in Canada, defending them on the ground of upholding liberal values, freedom of expression and all that. But its support is somewhat less shrill than that of Jagmeet Singh's probably because of the onus of ruling a nation. The present Canadian parliament has a fairly large representation of South Asians with the Sikhs, with or without a beard and turban, marking a strong presence for the first time in the country's history. These Sikh lawmakers, if not all, most of them, may not support separatists but there is no doubt that they may have a lurking sympathy for them. Last summer there was a minor political storm when the Canadian defence minister, Harjit Singh Sajjan, went to India and visited Punjab, the place of his origin. The Punjab chief minister, Capt. Amarinder Singh, refused to meet him, throwing allegations of his being a Khalistani sympathizer. The separatist politicos are more active in Canada than in the rest of the western hemisphere. There are more active Khalistani groups in Canada than in the US or the UK, the two other centres that attract Sikh extremists. Sikh extremists who had planted bombs on an Air India flight in 1985, resulting in the killing of 329 passengers, had found ready shelter in Canada. India believes most of them have close contacts with Pakistan's ISI. Anyhow this is no secret from the way Pakistan has been treating and honouring the Sikh extremist leaders. From Alternet The goal is ousting Trump critics in primaries and turning to Democrats in the fall. The Republican Party's white nationalist, anti-Washington wing led by Steve Bannon is hoping to turn 2018's Senate elections into a GOP civil war in which right-wingers oust Republican incumbents deemed insufficiently loyal and unseat Mitch McConnell as Senate majority leader. That's the takeaway from a series of reports over the past weekend, including a lengthy report at Breitbart News, which Bannon oversees, telegraphing this new intra-party civil war plan and targeting McConnell. The reports imply Bannon has access to the millions needed to wage the 2018 primary campaigns. In all likelihood, funds would come from his longtime patron, hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer and his family. The reports also suggest the Tea Party, long underwritten by the billionaire Koch brothers, would contribute. Next year's congressional midterms were supposed to be the Democrats' nightmare, with 23 incumbents and two Independents who vote with them defending their seats, while only eight GOP incumbents face re-election. Now, however, it appears that the Republicans' extreme right wing is poised to oust anyone resembling a centrist in low-turnout primaries before turning to November's race against Democrats. Breitbart boasted on its website: "'We're planning on building a broad anti-establishment coalition to replace the Republican Party of old with fresh new blood and fresh new ideas,' Andy Surabian, a senior adviser to the Great America Alliance [a pro-Trump super PAC that raised $30 million last year] and ex-White House aide, told Breitbart News. Their [Republican Senate] repeated failures to govern have only crystallized their lack of vision or backbone. The group of candidates we are looking to support in 2018 are all bound together in their agreement that the new Republican Party must be bold in their thinking and aggressive in their tactics." Breitbart was the most influential Republican website before last November's vote, as measured by reader traffic and shared content. Its latest account, however propagandistic, also quoted other far-right extremists like Jenny Beth Martin of Tea Party Patriots and Tony Perkins, the Family Research Council's president, who both said Washington Republicans were failing the voters who elected Trump president. "They are angry at the lack of Republican leadership on Capitol Hill, and many think it's time to ditch Mitch as the leader of the Senate," Martin said. "What I am beginning to remind people and let people know is I'm meeting incredible candidates around the country who are willing to take on the Republican status quo." One of those "incredible candidates" is Erik Prince, the founder of Blackwater, whose corporation providing mercenaries to the Pentagon was involved in the mass murder of Iraqi civilians. The New York Times reported that Prince, who once lived in Wyoming, traveled there to explore establishing legal residency to run as a senatorial candidate. "Mr. Prince appears increasingly likely to challenge John Barrasso, a senior member of the Senate Republican leadership, according to people who have spoken to him in recent days," the Times reported. "Republicans have privately said that a primary challenge against a lawmaker like Mr. Barrasso is the kind they fear most: an out-of-the-blue run by a renegade from the right against a senator whose sin is not a lack of conservative credentials, but an association with Mr. McConnell and other party leaders." Other outlets such as Bloomberg.com, reported that Bannon is the ringleader of a plan to "back primary challengers to almost every Republican senator who runs for re-election next year in an effort to depose Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and streamline Senate voting procedures." "Bannon has held a series of meetings to plan his moves for 2018 since late September, when he backed Roy Moore, the Alabama judge who's been accused of bigotry, in a successful runoff election against Senator Luther Strange, who had support from Trump and McConnell," Bloomberg reported. "Bannon plans to support as many as 15 Republican Senate candidates in 2018, including several challengers to incumbents, the people said. He'll support only candidates who agree to two conditions: They will vote against McConnell as majority leader, and they will vote to end senators' ability to block legislation by filibustering." The news accounts describe Bannon targeting Republican incumbents who are close to the GOP leadership, such as Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker. "Mr. Bannon is also hoping to persuade Ann LePage, the wife of Maine's outspoken governor, Paul LePage, to run for the Republican nomination to challenge Senator Angus King, an independent who is up for re-election in 2018," the Times said. The report on this would-be right-wing senatorial coup, from Bannon's mouthpiece, Breitbart, also listed which candidates they will be promoting. In Tennessee, where Republican incumbent Sen. Bob Corker is not seeking re-election, Breitbart is cheering on Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn. Civil advocacy groups are disappointed at the Supreme Court order on Muslim Ban 2.0. The Supreme Court of the United States Tuesday (Oct 10) issued an order in Trump vs. International Refugee Assistance Project dismissing the case from its docket. The case had been before the Court after a lower court blocked the President's second attempt to impose a Muslim ban. The Supreme Court's order Tuesday dismissed the government's appeal as moot, since part of President's Trump's ban expired two weeks ago. This order returns attention in the case to the Maryland district court, where the plaintiffs in International Refugee Assistance Project case have already moved for a court order blocking the President's third Muslim ban before it goes fully into effect on October 18. The Supreme Court's order does not affect the pending challenges to the new ban; nor does it apply to Trump vs. Hawaii, the case from the 9th Circuit, which blocked the refugee ban, a partial version of which expires in two weeks, in addition to blocking the now-expired travel ban. In response to the Supreme Court decision the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Asian Americans Advancing Justice, and the National Immigration Law Center, issued statements expressing their disappointment. Avideh Moussavian, Senior Policy Attorney at the National Immigration Law Center, said the Supreme Court order doesn't change the chaos and confusion suffered by our communities when traveling under the Trump administration. "While the court didn't issue a decision on the merits of the ban, we continue to fully believe that this iteration of the Muslim ban -- like prior versions -- is unlawful and unconstitutional. In doing so, the court was highlighting that this was a procedural decision," Moussavian said. The National Immigration Law Center is exclusively dedicated to defending and advancing the rights and opportunities of low-income immigrants and their families. Its mission is grounded in the belief that every American-and aspiring American-should have the opportunity to fulfill their full potential regardless of where they were born or how much money they have. Elica Vafaie, Staff Attorney at Asian Americans Advancing Justice, said called on everyone who wants to challenge these hateful Muslim Bans to join us in Washington, D.C. on October 18th. "Regardless of the decision of the Supreme Court, the current Muslim Ban continues to cause real harm to Muslim immigrants and refugees every day. This administration has made multiple attempts to ban Muslims through Executive Orders, proclamations, and administrative policies. We have been here before with Japanese internment and the Chinese Exclusion Act, and we will not be silent," Vafaie said. Asian Americans Advancing Justice is a national affiliation of five leading organizations advocating for the civil and human rights of Asian Americans and other underserved communities to promote a fair and equitable society for all. The affiliation's members are: Advancing Justice - Asian Law Caucus (San Francisco), Advancing Justice - AAJC (Washington, D.C.), Advancing Justice - Los Angeles, Advancing Justice - Atlanta, and Advancing Justice - Chicago. Gadeir Abbas, Senior Litigation Attorney at CAIR National, said that we will be in court on Monday to stop the latest attempt to ban Muslim communities. "The fight is not over and we are not giving up. We will continue to fight the new Muslim Ban, both in the lower courts and in the streets. We have been fighting the discriminatory and un-American actions of the Trump administration since day one and we will continue to hold the president and others accountable," Abbas said. The CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding. CNN reported that Tuesday's order of the Supreme Court has increased the possibility that the justices will not hear a challenge to the President's March executive order this term. First, the court dismissed a Maryland case in which a district court had temporarily blocked a key provision of the March order that halted travel from six Muslim-majority countries, the CNN said adding: "The justices noted that the provision of the travel ban had expired and that the case no longer presents "a live case or controversy." The court said it expressed "no views on the merits" of the case. The court did not act, however, on a separate and broader injunction in a related case brought by the state of Hawaii. That case dealt not only with a ban on travel from six Muslim majority countries, but also a ban on refugees. American cultural history offers many images of walking through difficult times: "Going down the road feeling bad," "You got to walk that lonesome valley," and Psalm 23, "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil." At the moment, Donald Trump is marching us "through the valley of the shadow." To say the least, it's a nerve-wracking journey. Thanks to Twitter and the mainstream media, daily we're subjected to Trump's tantrums. For many of us this is profoundly disturbing. On September 15th, Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank wrote that Trump had caused an alarming rise in Milbank's blood pressure. Milbank quipped that he was now afflicted with "Trump Hypertensive Unexplained Disorder" (THUD). In a followup column (click here ) Milbank reported that his readers reported a number of THUD-related symptoms: "Disturbed sleep. Anger. Dread. Weight loss. Overeating. Headaches. Fainting. Irregular heartbeat. Chronic neck pain. Depression. Irritable bowel syndrome. Tightness in the chest. Shortness of breath. Teeth grinding. Stomach ulcer. Indigestion. Shingles. Eye twitching. Nausea. Irritability. High blood sugar. Tinnitus. Reduced immunity. Racing pulse. Shaking limbs. Hair loss. Acid reflux. Deteriorating vision. Stroke. Heart attack." These comments came from those who disapprove of Trump. From Trump supporters, Milbank received vitriol: "Hurry up and die already! .".". just see a dr. You know, Dr Kevorkian." Milbank concluded, "Trump is causing, or at least aggravating, mental-health problems on both sides." Milbank is not alone in this observation. Health professionals tell me that, since the election, they have seen a dramatic increase in client ailments triggered by the behavior of Donald Trump. Several factors contribute to this "THUD epidemic": 1. Trump is omnipresent in the news. (He's far and away the most commonly searched for Google topic.) Nine months after Trump entered the White House, it's clear that he wants to dominate the news every day. To say the least, Donald has an enormous need for attention. 2. A common response to Trump overload is to turn off the news. But, in the long term, that's not a satisfactory answer because, whether we like it or not, Trump is President of the United States and has enormous power. He can affect our lives in many different ways: starting a nuclear war, ignoring the threat of global climate change, mishandling a natural disaster, shutting down a critical governmental service, and on and on. Trump is marching us "through the valley of the shadow." We've been thrust into an abusive relationship. 3. Trump is moody and volatile. From one day to the next, we don't know what Donald will do. Occasionally he seems presidential, as when he went to Las Vegas and comforted victims of the terrible shooting. On many other occasions, Trump acts like a petulant child and lashes out at whomever he believes is disrespecting him. For many Americans, Donald Trump is a difficult person whom we cannot get away from. In effect, we're trapped in an abusive relationship. It's not surprising that so many of us experience THUD. What should we do about this? When a healthcare professional is confronted with evidence of an abusive relationship, they advise the victim, "get out." A doctor or therapist will tell the abuse victim to leave the abuser and go somewhere safe. Indeed, many of us know people who, because of THUD, have left the country. However, for most of us leaving the US is not an option. Three options remain. One is to check out. Many Americans have absented themselves from all political discussions. In effect, they are pretending that Trump doesn't exist or that he cannot affect them. Another option -- popular in Washington -- is to pray for intervention. After Trump was elected, rumors circulated that his family -- particularly his daughter, Ivanka -- would keep him check. When this hope proved to be foolhardy, some suggested that the Republican Party "elders" would keep Donald in check -- somehow Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan would limit Trump's damage. Recent months have proved this hope also to be foolhardy. At the moment, the dominant intervention fantasy involves "the good generals": Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Chief of Staff John Kelly (both retired Marine Corps generals). The notion is that Mattis or Kelly will stop Trump from a catastrophic action caused by a fit of pique; for example, they will keep him from bombing North Korea because Donald feels disrespected by Kim Jong Un. Nonetheless, it's obvious Mattis and Kelly have no influence on domestic policy: they haven't intervened to stop Trump from repealing DACA or rolling back environmental protections. If direct intervention with Trump seems inconceivable, there remains the possibility of blocking him in Congress. That is, the notion that in 2018 Democrats will regain control of the House or Senate and use congressional power to check Trump; for example by passing legislation to defend "Dreamers"or to strengthen environmental protections. This is the most viable remedy for all of us who suffer from "Trump Hypertensive Unexplained Disorder;" work to ensure that Democrats win in 2018. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil." To walk without fear we must take action to block Donald Trump. (This is a reprint from NewsBred). Till a few years ago, it was quite a fun to "spot the difference" between two almost identical images. The challenge was irresistible with the taunt that the two images differed on at least 10 counts. You scratched your head, forgot the world, and strained your eyes and crowned yourself genius once the task was accomplished. Reading Indian Express these days is an exercise of a similar order. You have to match the headlines, the text and the photo and then pore over inverted commas and quotes to understand where the mischief has been planted. It's not an easy order for most such fake news are spread over two pages and are 1000-plus words, relying on time-tested tactics that readers would give up after headline or a few first paragraphs. It costs me hours but I have worked out a way to get through this maze. My strike rate is 99 out of 100, which is good enough and satiates my "spot-the-difference" urge. First of course are the stories on front page. Indian Express these days have reserved it to Modi-Centre-BJP bashing. (Now Yogi Adityanath is inching up the charts.) Even on front page, the bigger decks accorded to a headline, the more reasons to suspect a mischief hiding in the text-matter. Most importantly, I make it a point to read the final two paras. It's almost guaranteed that the saner, and the essential truth of the story, is in these two paras. After you read it, you go through the story backwards and spot the fake news. It's a science folks! You got to give the devil his due. (Oh, I am sorry. Leftists don't believe in Gods or Devils.) There are a few other fake news spotters in Indian Express. If there is any front page news on Dalits, you got to really flush your lens and go through it. Most likely, such stories appear in profusion before an assembly elections. Many a times these stories are discredited--as you would find in this link of my aggregated stories in NewsBred. Either Indian Express doesn't carry an apology--like the fake moustache story on Dalits in Gujarat recently--or the fake-news buster true account is buried in inside pages. You could also be sure that the anniversaries of all unfortunate victims of Muslim community, Akhlaq and Pehlu etc, would deserve a front-page mega spread, most likely as anchor story. (Never mind, Hindu victims never get such a privilege, some would say not even our soldier martyrs.) Now, you must watch out for June 23, 2018, when it would be a year to Junaid Khan's unfortunate killing in Ballabhgarh. I am second-guessing, you would have an Indian Express anchor on Junaid Khan, come June 23 next year. I am not even coming to JNU's Kanhaiyas and Umar Khalids of our world. I am also not mentioning how the coverage of grieving parents and relatives of minority victims--mind you never a Hindu victim--sitting at Jantar Mantar or taking out a demonstration on Capital streets has half-a-page reserved for it. How BHU girls agitation is a news and not that of AMU protesting girl students. For these are subjective matters and is the prerogative of a newspaper. To push the agenda, our mainstream English media-the Lutyens' Media--let's its editorial spread of two pages to do the dirty job. Our attention is fake news and so we must return to the subject. The second lead of Indian Express today is: "Slowdown concern, need to push growth jobs: PM's advisors" Quite a few things in this headline and the positioning of the story got my antennas up. I could smell fake news in the use of "concern" and "PM's advisors" in the headline. Would PM's advisors really go public with their "concern" on the state of the economy? And the use of "PM's advisors" and not the Economic Advisory Council (EAC) was a giveaway on who is meant to be a fall guy. All the economic ills of the country, by inference, must be put at the door of the Prime Minister. His own advisors are expressing concern at their own authoritarian ruler, that's the inference. The fake use of "concern" was easy to spot. The Express quoted part-time member Ashima Goyal that EAC would "work as a sounding board of ideas." But Express cleverly preceded this quote with an inserted view of their own of "concern." Read this particular para and make up your own mind: There is a lot of concern about the economy today and the Council will "work as a sounding board of ideas", EAC member Ashima Goyal said. (The Express cleverly held back the full designation of Ashima Goyal. She is a part-time and not full-time EAC member.) That being so, I pored over the rest of the lengthy story. Then I read the same story in Times of India and Hindustan Times. I was intrigued that the Times of India prominently put in a front-page lead box the view of another EAC part-time member Rathin Roy that "IMF's growth projections are 80% wrong... World Bank's growth projections are 65% wrong. The government's estimates are right more than 90% of the time." However, the front-page 1000-plus wordathon of Indian Express has no mention of it at all! It is such selective and distorted coverage which has made Indian Express lose all its respect in the eyes of the discerning readers. It is morally wrong, agenda-driven, and worse a case of cheating against its paying-consumers. When the readers are seeking true coverage and information, they are getting blighted and manipulated coverage. Indian Express must be having its own compulsion, their hands could be forced but the newspaper would do well to heed this opinion of one of its readers: "I haven't seen any story which favours a Hindu viewpoint in Indian Express for ages, at least on front page." The worst thing a newspaper could do to its reputation is to appear biased and agenda-driven. Facebook has set out 10 tools to check Fake News. A few give-aways are headlines, source, evidence and photos. Indian Express on Thursday's edition has been found out in peddling a Fake News. From Empire Burlesque From Vanity Fair: "I HATE EVERYONE IN THE WHITE HOUSE!": TRUMP SEETHES AS ADVISERS FEAR THE PRESIDENT IS "UNRAVELING" The best solution for Trump personally would be to resign now (citing "deep state, fake news" persecution). He would immediately be hired by NBC (yes, the one he's threatening now) in a revival of "The Apprentice." He would go on being a big media noise, investigations of his manifest criminality would stop, his "brand" would be more potent than ever. He'd play the martyr to right-wing crowds, while going on Kimmel, Colbert, even SNL to josh and joke with his fellow celebs, now treating him as a lovable rogue once again. This is exactly what will happen if he leaves early enough, by his own choice. It's a win-win situation for him; he will probably figure this out soon enough. Meanwhile, the radical extremists in the GOP, Wall Street, Pentagon, the Koch-Mercer oligarchs, etc., will carry on their authoritarian agenda, with Trump still functioning as an effective diversion for them. People will be so glad he's gone they'll be even less inclined to see the reality of what's going on. The "Resistance," now "victorious," will go back to pushing neoliberal nostrums and centrist surrender as the radical extremists and corporate overlords rage on. Even if Trump is too stupid to take this opportunity while he can, the scenario still might play out as above. An impeached Trump might be pardoned by Pres Pence, a la Ford and Nixon, as a way to bring "closure" to the crisis. Trump won't lay low for years like Nixon, but go off immediately to NBC (or FOX or Breitbart or even his own network) and keep making noise and fomenting strife and chaos. What we are facing is not just the deadly, sinister antics of a clown but a vast system of oppression that has grown up around us, with bipartisan support, and now has us in a death grip. There are some hopeful counter-forces in play, but they face a far more daunting challenge than merely removing Trump -- and, as Stan Rogouski points out, with a far more deadened public, more atomized & cowed, less easy to rouse to fight for their own common good, than we saw in the 60s & 70s, and with institutional bulwarks far less powerful and much more compromised by the power system than before. There are long, hard, dark days ahead of us. *** I wrote more on this systemic challenge in a Facebook post earlier this week, after Trump's tweet-threat against NBC: It's way past time to stop treating Trump as a joke, and trying to "resist" him with talk show snark and Alec Baldwin imitations. It's time to take him very, very seriously, to not be distracted by his diversionary tactics but to look closely and carefully at what his administration is actually doing -- and at what he is actually proposing and promoting in tweets like this one. He's not a joke; he's a kleptocratic authoritarian who continues to be supported and excused and empowered by one of the main political parties, by the nation's most powerful financial center, Wall Street (whose denizens fill his cabinet), by the most powerful corporations and oligarchs (Kochs, Mercers) in the country, and by the most powerful military force and most pervasive intelligence apparatus in human history. It's time to realize he's not just some "loose cannon" who will soon be swept away by "the grown-ups in the room." The so-called grown-ups in the room are the ones who are empowering him. He is working hard to give them everything they've ever dreamed of: unregulated corporate rapine; unlimited military spending; control of the media; control of education; unrestricted police powers to protect their wealth and power from any protest or resistance; restricting or eliminating the right to vote to all sorts of the "wrong" kind of people who might vote to advance the common good instead of elite interests; using ALEC and other far-right "legal" groups to pass laws restricting the rights of states and communities to make their own decisions and cut off the avenues of legal redress for ordinary people; constructing a new kind of society based on fearful obedience, draconian authority, elite control and the subjugation of individual citizens. Although they may scoff at him behind his back, call him a "moron," sniffily recoil at his vulgarity, they know he's actually their Santa Claus, with a bottomless bag of goodies for them. They know his reality show schtick distracts us from what he is doing for them, makes us blind to the harsh new society rising all around us. They aren't going to get rid of him. We need to be more clear about what we're really facing. It's not just a stupid man-baby tweeting bellicose nonsense on his toilet; it's everything that he is doing and empowering -- and everyone who is empowering him. *** A couple of days later, I saw this interview with Noam Chomsky, making many of the same points, with greater detail and scope. There is also much more on the foreign policy aspects. The whole thing is worth reading, but here are a few salient points: "The claims [of Trump's tweets] themselves don't really matter. It's enough that attention is diverted from what is happening in the background. There, out of the spotlight, the most savage fringe of the Republican Party is carefully advancing policies designed to enrich their true constituency: the constituency of private power and wealth, 'the masters of mankind,' to borrow Adam Smith's phrase ... Now, while attention is focused on Trump's latest mad doings, the Ryan gang and the executive branch are ramming through legislation and orders that undermine workers' rights, cripple consumer protections and severely harm rural communities. They seek to devastate health programs, revoking the taxes that pay for them in order to further enrich their constituency, and to eviscerate the Dodd-Frank Act, which imposed some much-needed constraints on the predatory financial system that grew during the neoliberal period. "Not all of the damage can be blamed on the con man who is nominally in charge, on his outlandish appointments, or on the congressional forces he has unleashed. Some of the most dangerous developments under Trump trace back to Obama initiatives -- initiatives passed, to be sure, under pressure from the Republican Congress." Article originally published in Stars and Stripes By Robert Weiner and Ben Lasky The idea of privatizing the war in Afghanistan with contractors was floated by notorious ex-Blackwater CEO Erik Prince, but the military immediately rejected the suggestion. However, as American Legion President Charles Schmidt said in August, "stealth privatization" has been and remains underway. President Donald Trump has been in a middle ground on this issue. The president's proposed federal budget would have led to the privatization of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Choice Program was created during the VA scandal, allowing veterans who live 40 or more miles away from a health care facility or have to wait at least 30 days for an appointment, to seek private medical treatment. The recently passed Veterans Affairs Choice and Quality Employment Act extended the program until its funding runs out. While the Choice Program could become permanent, unemployment benefits for disabled veterans would be slashed by $40.8 billion over 10 years at the same time under the administration's budget. That's why Schmidt called the proposal "stealth privatization." Matthew Cary, founding president of Veterans and Military Families for Progress and board member of the Salute America's Heroes Coalition, is concerned about privatization. In an interview Oct. 4, he told us, "The move toward privatization is going against the current practice that works so well for the country. Why do we need to be tampering with that?" Cary says there are lots of reasons not to privatize fighting wars, most importantly that defending our country is a matter of "service, not profits." Another is to protect against torture. It was private CIA contractors who committed torture at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq that destroyed the U.S. reputation for morality in the Middle East and much of the international community. The administration should leave the war in Afghanistan in the hands of the military, who unlike contractors, adhere to the Army Field Manual. The Army Field Manual follows the Geneva Conventions and states, "All captured or detained personnel shall be treated humanely at all times and in accordance with DOD Directive 3115.09 " and no person in the custody or under the control of the DOD, regardless of nationality or physical location, shall be subject to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment as defined in US law, including the Detainee Treatment Act of 2005." Private contractors of the CIA are not under these restrictions. Trump said during the 2016 campaign when discussing his views on torture, that, "I don't think it's tough enough," and that he prefers "much worse." This is a campaign pledge that a private military would implement. While the military has refused to do CIA contractor-style torture, they have given it a wink and nod. When Gen. Geoffrey Miller moved from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to Abu Ghraib, he reportedly vowed to "Gitmoize" Abu Ghraib by moving torture strategies over. Simply allowing the CIA to do it through private contractors is no better. In fact, it's worse, because there is no oversight. According to Open Society Foundations, established by investor and philanthropist George Soros, the U.S. has been farming out torture to 54 countries since 9/11. A 2008 bill would have stopped the CIA from bypassing the Army Field Manual, but after the bill passed both chambers of Congress, it was vetoed by President George W. Bush. So that legislation does not exist and CIA torture remains an option. Torture brings contempt and revenge. According to a report by the Director of National Intelligence, through 2016, 29 percent of Gitmo detainees have "re-engaged in terrorism" -- but only 7 percent of those released under former President Barack Obama did so after his "no torture" order was issued at the beginning of his administration. While appearing on MSNBC in January, retired four-star Gen. Barry McCaffrey, called Trump's words on torture "against international law. It puts our military at risk. This is a really shaky position." The U.S. often holds itself as an example for the rest of the world. We speak up when human rights abuses take place. It is time to get back to being an example on how we treat prisoners of war. The proposal to privatize war-making was rightly nipped in the bud. But there is not yet a nail in the coffin of privatization or private contractor torture. Robert Weiner is a former White House spokesman in the Bill Clinton and George W. Bush administrations and former spokesman for the House Government Operations Committee. Ben Lasky is a senior policy analyst at Solutions for Change.
