Hungary: Ferenc Mádl is elected president in the third round of voting (243-96), after failing in two earlier rounds on June 5 and 6 to win the necessary two-thirds majority. He will take office August 4.

United States: Former Iowa governor (1961-63) Norman A. Erbe dies.

China: The chairman of the government of Nei Mongol Autonomous Region, Yun Bulong, is killed when a train hits his car. Zhou Dehai, standing vice chairman of the government, becomes responsible for most government business.

Japan: In parliamentary elections, the Liberal-Democratic Party wins 233 of 480 seats in the House of Deputies, followed by the Democratic Party with 127, New Komeito with 31, the Liberal Party with 22, the Communist Party with 20, and the Social Democratic Party with 19. Turnout is 62.5%.
Zimbabwe: In parliamentary elections held June 24-25, the Zimbabwe African National Union wins 48.6% of the vote (62 of 120 elected seats) and the Movement for Democratic Change 47% (57). Turnout is 57%.
