Australia: Malcolm McCusker is sworn in as governor of Western Australia.
Papua New Guinea: The Supreme Court rules to suspend Finance Minister Patrick Pruaitch, who is due to face a leadership tribunal over misconduct charges. Pruaitch refuses to leave his post and is supported by Acting Prime Minister Sam Abal, who on July 5 declares that he still considers Pruaitch a minister.
Spain: Yolanda Barcina takes office as president of the government of Navarra.
Switzerland: Peter Zwick becomes president of the government of Basel-Land and Niklaus Bleiker Landammann of Obwalden.
United States: Leon Panetta takes office as defense secretary. Michael Morell becomes acting CIA director.
United States: Alvin Brown takes office as mayor of Jacksonville and Carlos Gimenez as mayor of Miami-Dade County.

Brazil: Former president (1992-95) and governor of Minas Gerais (1999-2003) Itamar Franco dies.
Jordan: In a cabinet reshuffle, Mazen Saket is appointed interior minister.

Argentina: In the gubernatorial runoff in Tierra del Fuego, Fabiana Ríos wins 50.2% of the vote and Rosana Bertone 48.9%.
Japan: In gubernatorial elections in Gunma, incumbent Masaaki Osawa defeats Arata Goto, Keiji Kosuge, and Atsushi Ebine.
Mexico: In gubernatorial elections in México, Eruviel Ávila of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) wins about 65% of the vote, Alejandro Encinas of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) about 22%, and Luis Felipe Bravo of the National Action Party (PAN) about 13%. In Coahuila, Rubén Moreira Valdez (PRI) wins about 61% of the vote and Guillermo Anaya (PAN) about 36%. In Nayarit, Roberto Sandoval (PRI) wins about 46% of the vote, Martha Elena García (PAN) about 38%, and Guadalupe Acosta Naranjo (PRD) about 11%.
Thailand: In parliamentary elections, the Pheu Thai party wins 48.4% of the vote (265 of 500 seats), the Democrat Party 35.2% (159), and Bhumjaithai 3.9% (34). Turnout is 75%.

Haiti: President Michel Martelly nominates Bernard Gousse as prime minister.

Mayotte: Prefect Hubert Derache leaves office. Patrick Duprat becomes acting prefect. Thomas Degos is named as new prefect on July 20 and takes office July 26.

Switzerland: Former Landammann of Sankt Gallen (1952-53, 1959-60, 1966-67) Simon Frick dies.

Switzerland: Hugo Kayser is elected Landammann of Nidwalden.
Turkey: The new cabinet of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is announced with Idris Naim Sahin as interior minister and Ismet Yilmaz as defense minister; Ahmet Davutoglu keeps the foreign and Mehmet Simsek the finance portfolio.
United States: Carolyn Goodman takes office as mayor of Las Vegas.

Lebanon: The cabinet of Prime Minister Najib Mikati receives a confidence vote (68-0 in the 128-seat parliament).
Russia: Andrey Shevelyov is confirmed by the local Assembly (30-10) and sworn in as governor of Tver oblast. The Duma of Sakhalin oblast confirms Aleksandr Khoroshavin (20-3 with 2 abstentions) as governor.

Belgium: Elio Di Rupo asks King Albert II to relieve him of the task of forming a government. The king rejects the request on July 22.

Spain: Interior Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba resigns. In a cabinet reshuffle on July 11, Antonio Camacho is appointed interior minister.
Spain: José Antonio Monago takes office as president of the Junta of Extremadura.
Turkmenistan: In a cabinet reshuffle, Dovletgeldy Sadykov is appointed as finance minister.

Brazil: Former governor of Rio de Janeiro (1975-79) Floriano Peixoto Faria Lima dies.
South Sudan: The country becomes independent and Salva Kiir is sworn in as president. On July 10 a caretaker government is named (sworn in July 11) including Deng Alor as foreign minister, Nhial Deng Nhial as defense minister, Gier Choung Aloung as interior minister, and David Deng Athorbei as finance minister.

Argentina: In the election for chief of government of Buenos Aires city, incumbent Mauricio Macri (Propuesta Republicana) wins 47% of the vote, Daniel Filmus (Frente para la Victoria) 27.9%, and Fernando Solanas (Proyecto Sur) 12.8%. A runoff is held on July 31, Macri winning 64.3% of the vote and Filmus 35.7%.
Bosnia and Herzegovina: Zeljko Komsic becomes chairman of the Presidency.

Cyprus: Defense Minister Kostas Papakostas resigns. On July 14 Agriculture Minister Dimitris Iliadis is in addition appointed defense minister.

Saint Kitts and Nevis: In parliamentary elections in Nevis, the Nevis Reformation Party wins 50.2% of the vote (3 of 5 elected seats) and the Concerned Citizens Movement 49.8% (2). Turnout is 81.2%.
Tuvalu: Former governor-general (2005-10) Sir Filoimea Telito dies.

Macedonia: Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski submits to parliament his nominations for a new cabinet, including Nikola Poposki as foreign minister and Fatmir Besimi as defense minister. The cabinet is approved on July 28 (70-47).

Egypt: Foreign Minister Mohamed al-Orabi resigns. On July 17 Mohamed Kamel Amr is named as new foreign minister, and Hazem al-Beblawi to replace Samir Radwan as finance minister. The new cabinet is sworn in on July 21.

São Tomé and Príncipe: In presidential elections, Manuel Pinto da Costa wins 35.8% of the vote, Evaristo Carvalho 21.8%, Maria das Neves 14%, and Delfim Neves 13.9%. Turnout is 66.2%. A runoff is to be held on August 7.
Uruguay: Former president (1972-76) Juan María Bordaberry dies.

United States: Michael Hancock is sworn in as mayor of Denver.

Cyprus: Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou resigns.
Pakistan: Hina Rabbani Khar (hitherto minister of state) is appointed full-fledged foreign minister.

Indonesia: In gubernatorial elections in Papua Barat, incumbent Abraham O. Atururi wins 57.7% of the vote, Wahidin Puarada 20.5%, and Dominggus Mandacan 19.8%. Before these results are declared, Atururi's current term ends and on July 25 Ahmad Tanribali Lamo is sworn in as acting governor.
Peru: President-elect Ollanta Humala begins to announce the composition of his future cabinet with Salomón Lerner as prime minister and Luis Miguel Castilla as finance minister. On July 21 Rafael Roncagliolo is named as foreign minister and Daniel Mora as defense minister, and on July 24 Óscar Valdés as interior minister. Humala and his cabinet take office on July 28.
Somalia: Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali unveils his cabinet, including Mohamed Mohamud Ibrahim as foreign minister, Hussein Arab Isse as defense minister, Abdisamed Mohamud Sheikh Hassan as interior minister, and Abdinasir Mohamed Abdulle as finance minister.

Vietnam: Truong Tan Sang is elected president with 487 of 500 votes in the National Assembly. He nominates Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung for another term, who is reelected on July 26 with 470 votes.

Costa Rica: Foreign Minister René Castro is moved to another ministry, effective August 1, and Enrique Castillo is named as new foreign minister, to take office September 5. Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Roverssi will serve in the interim.
Cyprus: The cabinet resigns at the request of the president.
