India: The new state of Telangana comes into existence; E.S.L. Narasimhan is sworn in as governor and Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao as chief minister.
Indonesia: Muhammad Ridho Ficardo is sworn in as governor of Lampung.
Libya: Militias loyal to Ahmed Matiq storm the prime minister's office, and Matiq, elected to the post on May 4, announces that he has taken office. On June 9, however, the Supreme Court declares his election unconstitutional, ruling that Abdullah al-Thani remains prime minister. Matiq accepts the ruling.
Palestine: The new unity government of Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah is sworn in, ending the separate Gaza government. Riyad al-Malki remains foreign minister and Shukri Bishara finance minister; Hamdallah also holds the interior portfolio.

Spain: The abdication of King Juan Carlos is announced. On June 18 he signs the abdication law, effective at midnight. On June 19 Crown Prince Felipe is proclaimed King Felipe VI.
Switzerland: Barbara Egger-Jenzer is elected president of the government of Bern.

Laos: Maj.Gen. Sengnouane Xayalath is appointed acting defense minister.
Syria: In presidential elections, incumbent Bashar al-Assad wins 92.2% of the vote, Hassan al-Nouri 4.5%, and Maher Hajjar 3.3%. Turnout is 73.4%.

Zimbabwe: Former foreign minister (1988-95) Nathan Shamuyarira dies.

Guatemala: Finance Minister María Castro resigns. On June 16 Dorval Carías takes over as interim finance minister; he is confirmed in the post on June 19.

Russia: President Vladimir Putin accepts the resignation of the governor of Saint Petersburg, Georgy Poltavchenko, and appoints him as acting governor until elections.
United States: The Senate confirms (78-17) Sylvia Mathews Burwell as secretary of health and human services. She is sworn in on June 9.

Mauritius: Finance Minister Xavier-Luc Duval resigns. Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam takes charge of the portfolio.
Russia: President Vladimir Putin accepts the resignation of the governor of Samara oblast, Nikolay Merkushkin, and appoints him as acting governor until elections.

Ukraine: Petro Poroshenko is sworn in as president. On June 18 he nominates Pavlo Klimkin as foreign minister, who is confirmed by parliament on June 19.

Egypt: Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is sworn in as president. On June 9 he asks Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab to form a new government. On June 16 Mahlab names Sameh Shoukry as foreign minister. The cabinet is sworn in on June 17.
Georgia: In parliamentary elections in South Ossetia, United Ossetia wins 20 of 34 seats (43.1% of the vote), Unity of the People 6, the People's Party 4, and Nykhas 4. Turnout is 60.1%.

India: Nara Chandrababu Naidu is sworn in as chief minister of Andhra Pradesh.
Kosovo: In parliamentary elections, the alliance led by the Democratic Party of Kosovo wins 30.4% of the vote (37 of 120 seats), the Democratic League of Kosovo 25.2% (30), the Self-Determination Movement 13.6% (16), the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo 9.5% (11), the Serb List 5.2% (9), the Initiative for Kosovo 5.2% (6), and the New Kosovo Alliance 4.7% (0). Turnout is 42.6%.

Argentina: Former governor of Chaco (1987-91) Danilo Baroni dies.
Germany: Former minister-president of Sachsen-Anhalt (1994-2002) Reinhard Höppner dies.
Greece: A reshuffled cabinet is named (sworn in June 10), with Gkikas Chardouvelis as finance minister and Argyris Ntinopoulos as interior minister.
Italy: Sergio Chiamparino takes office as president of Piemonte.
Lebanon: Another parliamentary session to elect a president fails for lack of a quorum. The seventh attempt fails likewise on June 18. The eighth is scheduled for July 2.

Brazil: Former governor of Rio de Janeiro (1995-99) Marcello Nunes de Alencar dies.
Israel: In the first round of voting in parliament to elect a president, Reuven Rivlin receives 44 votes, Meir Sheetrit 31, Dalia Itzik 28, and Dalia Dorner 13. A majority of 61 votes being required, there is a runoff, Rivlin winning 63 and Sheetrit 53. Rivlin is to take office July 27.
South Korea: President Park Geun Hye nominates Moon Chang Keuk as prime minister. In a cabinet reshuffle on June 13, Choi Kyung Hwan is named finance minister. On June 24 Moon withdraws his name from consideration. On June 26 Park retains Chung Hong Won as prime minister.

Antigua and Barbuda: In parliamentary elections, the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party wins 56.4% of the vote (14 of 17 seats) and the United Progressive Party 42% (3). Turnout is 90.3%. On June 13 Gaston Browne is sworn in as prime minister. On June 18 his cabinet is sworn in, including himself as finance minister and Charles Fernandez as foreign minister.
Canada: In parliamentary elections in Ontario, the Liberal Party wins 38.6% of the vote (58 of 107 seats), the Progressive Conservative Party 31.3% (28), the New Democratic Party 23.8% (21), and the Green Party 4.8% (0).

Afghanistan: In presidential elections, Ashraf Ghani wins 55.3% of the vote and Abdullah Abdullah 44.7%. Turnout is about 60%.
Guinea-Bissau: Former foreign minister (2009-11) Adelino Mano Quetá dies.

Colombia: In the presidential runoff, Juan Manuel Santos wins 53.1% of the vote and Óscar Iván Zuluaga 46.9%. Turnout is 47.9%.

Mexico: The governor of Michoacán, Fausto Vallejo Figueroa, resigns. On June 20 the state parliament elects (38-0) Salvador Jara Guerrero as governor, to serve until Sept. 30, 2015.

The Bahamas: It is announced that Governor-General Sir Arthur Foulkes will leave office July 8.
Macedonia: Parliament approves the new cabinet of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, including Zoran Jolevski as defense minister, other key posts being unchanged.

Liechtenstein: Former head of government (1974-78) Walter Kieber dies.
Mauritania: In the first round of presidential elections, incumbent Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz wins 81.9% of the vote, Biram Dah Ebeid 8.7%, Boydiel Ould Houmeid 4.5%, and Ibrahima Moctar Sarr 4.4%. Turnout is 56.5%.
Nigeria: In gubernatorial elections in Ekiti, Ayo Fayose (People's Democratic Party) wins 59.4% of the vote and incumbent Kayode Fayemi (All Progressives Congress) 35.2%. Turnout is 65%. Fayose is to take office October 16.

Czech Republic: The governor of Stredoceský kraj, Josef Rihák, resigns. On June 27 Milos Petera is elected new governor.
Finland: Parliament elects Alexander Stubb as prime minister (96-76); he is officially appointed by the president on June 24, with a cabinet unchanged in key positions.

Libya: In parliamentary elections (turnout about 45%), 188 independents are elected; 12 of the 200 seats remain empty due to boycotts or lack of security preventing an election.
Poland: The government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk wins a confidence vote in parliament (237-203).
The Sudan: In a cabinet reshuffle, Col.Gen. Esmat Abdel Rahman is appointed interior minister (sworn in June 26).
