Panama: Juan Carlos Varela takes office as president with his cabinet, including Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado as foreign minister (see May 4).
Switzerland: Isaac Reber becomes president of the government of Basel-Land, Res Schmid Landammann of Nidwalden, Hans Wallimann Landammann of Obwalden, and Andreas Barraud Landammann of Schwyz.

India: Ram Naresh Yadav is sworn in as governor of Chhattisgarh and Krishan Kant Paul as governor of Nagaland.
Lebanon: The eighth attempt of the parliament to elect a president fails due to lack of a quorum; so does the ninth, on July 23, the next being scheduled for August 12.
Nicaragua: Former foreign minister (1997-98) Emilio Álvarez Montalván dies.
Ukraine: President Petro Poroshenko nominates Col.Gen. Valeriy Heletey as defense minister. He is confirmed by the parliament (260 votes) on July 3.

India: The governor of Bihar, D.Y. Patil, is given additional charge of West Bengal (sworn in July 4).

The Bahamas: Dame Marguerite Pindling is announced as new governor-general (sworn in July 8).

India: The governor of Goa, B.V. Wanchoo, resigns. On July 7 the governor of Rajasthan, Margaret Alva, is given additional charge of Goa (sworn in July 12).

Senegal: President Macky Sall dismisses Prime Minister Aminata Touré. On July 6 Sall appoints Mohamed Dionne as prime minister. His cabinet is unchanged in key positions. The new government takes office July 8.

India: The governor of Gujarat, Kamla Beniwal, is appointed as governor of Mizoram (sworn in July 9), replacing Vakkom Purushothaman, who is appointed as governor of Nagaland. The governor of Rajasthan, Margaret Alva, is given additional charge of Gujarat (sworn in July 7). On July 11 Purushothaman resigns in protest against his transfer. On July 14 Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya is appointed as governor of Nagaland (sworn in July 19) and also receives the additional charge of Tripura (sworn in July 21); Om Prakash Kohli is appointed as governor of Gujarat (sworn in July 16), Balramji Dass Tandon as governor of Chhattisgarh (sworn in July 25), Ram Naik as governor of Uttar Pradesh (sworn in July 22), and Keshari Nath Tripathi as governor of West Bengal (sworn in July 24).

Australia: The governor of Tasmania, Peter Underwood, dies. David Porter is appointed as administrator until July 19 when Lieutenant Governor Alan Blow is expected to return from an absence; however, Blow returns early and takes over as administrator on July 9.
Georgia: Former president (1992-2003) Eduard Shevardnadze (also foreign minister of the Soviet Union 1985-91, 1991) dies.

Laos: Maj.Gen. Sengnouane Xayalath is confirmed as defense minister.
United States: Former governor of Idaho (1977-87) John V. Evans dies.

Cook Islands: In parliamentary elections, the Cook Islands Party wins 13 of 24 seats, the Democratic Party 8, and the One Cook Islands Movement 2.
Indonesia: In presidential elections, Joko Widodo (Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle) wins 53.2% of the vote and Prabowo Subianto (Great Indonesia Movement Party) 46.8%.
United States: The Senate confirms (71-26) Julián Castro as secretary of housing and urban development. On July 22 he resigns as mayor of San Antonio and Ivy Taylor is sworn in as mayor. On July 28 Castro is sworn in as secretary.

India: The lieutenant governor of Puducherry, Virendra Kataria, is dismissed and the lieutenant governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, A.K. Singh, is given additional charge of Puducherry (sworn in July 17).

Iraq: Hussein al-Shahristani is appointed acting foreign minister after Kurdish ministers including Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari pulled out of the government.

Ireland: In a cabinet reshuffle, Charlie Flanagan becomes foreign minister and Simon Coveney defence minister.
Jamaica: Former governor-general (1991-2006) Sir Howard Cooke dies.

Serbia: Finance Minister Lazar Krstic resigns. Economy Minister Dusan Vujovic is appointed acting finance minister (acting for Krstic until July 15 when the National Assembly acknowledges Krstic's resignation).

Japan: In gubernatorial elections in Shiga, Taizo Mikazuki wins 46.3% of the vote, Takashi Koyari 43.9%, and Ikuo Tsubota 9.7%. Turnout is 50.2%.
Slovenia: In parliamentary elections, the Party of Miro Cerar wins 34.6% of the vote (36 of 90 seats), the Slovenian Democratic Party 20.7% (21), the Democratic Party of Pensioners of Slovenia 10.2% (10), the United Left 6% (6), the Social Democrats 6% (6), New Slovenia-Christian Democrats 5.6% (5), and the Alliance of Alenka Bratusek 4.3% (4). Turnout is 51.2%.
