Kenya: The Supreme Court nullifies the August 8 presidential election, ordering a re-run within 60 days (subsequently set for October 17, later moved to October 26).

Singapore: J.Y. Pillay becomes acting president as Tony Tan's term ends. On September 13 Halimah Yacob is declared elected as president, being the sole candidate to qualify for the contest. She is sworn in on September 14.

India: In a cabinet reshuffle, Nirmala Sitharaman becomes defense minister.

Christmas Island/Cocos Islands: Natasha Griggs is appointed administrator of both territories, to take office October 5.
Taiwan: Premier Lin Chuan's resignation is announced. On September 5 Lai Ching-te is named premier; he is sworn in September 8, with a cabinet unchanged in key positions.
Uzbekistan: In a cabinet reshuffle, Abdusalom Azizov becomes defense minister and Pulat Bobojonov interior minister.

Romania: Defense Minister Adrian Tutuianu resigns. Ion-Marcel Ciolacu is appointed acting defense minister on September 6. On September 12 Mihai Fifor is appointed and sworn in as defense minister.

Senegal: Prime Minister Mohamed Dionne resigns. On September 6 he is reappointed by President Macky Sall. On September 7, the new cabinet is announced with Sidiki Kaba as foreign minister and Aly Ngouille Ndiaye as interior minister, while Augustin Tine remains armed forces minister and Amadou Ba finance minister.

China: Shen Yiqin is appointed acting governor of Guizhou.
Tonga: It is announced that the king approved on September 5 the appointment (retroactive to September 1) of Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa as finance minister.
Tunisia: In a cabinet reshuffle, Abdelkrim Zbidi is named defense minister, Lotfi Brahem interior minister, and Ridha Chalghoum finance minister. Parliament approves the new cabinet on September 11.

Congo (Kinshasa): The provincial assembly of Équateur passes a no-confidence motion (21-0) against the governor, Tony Cassius Bolamba. Alexis Nkumu Isangola becomes acting governor on September 8.
Kosovo: President Hashim Thaçi asks Ramush Haradinaj to form a government. On September 9 Haradinaj's cabinet is approved by 61 votes in the 120-seat parliament. It includes Behgjet Pacolli as foreign minister, Rrustem Berisha as defense minister, Flamur Sefaj as interior minister, and Bedri Hamza as finance minister.
Mongolia: Parliament votes to remove Prime Minister Jargaltulga Erdenebat (42 votes for removal). On September 26 the ruling party nominates Ukhnaa Khürelsükh as its candidate for prime minister.

France: Bruno Retailleau resigns as president of the Regional Council of Pays de la Loire, effective September 30.
Moldova: President Igor Dodon requests the resignation of the acting defense minister, Gheorghe Galbura. On September 12, Prime Minister Pavel Filip nominates Eugen Sturza as defense minister but he is rejected by the president on September 13. Filip submits the nomination of Sturza again but the president rejects him again on September 19.

Albania: President Ilir Meta reappoints Edi Rama as prime minister. On September 10 Meta appoints the cabinet proposed by Rama (see August 17). On September 13 the government wins a vote of confidence in parliament (78-51).
Uruguay: Vice President Raúl Sendic resigns. Lucía Topolansky succeeds him on September 13.

Russia: The parliament of Adygeya unanimously elects Murat Kumpilov as head of the republic. The (acting) incumbents also win in popular elections in the republics of Buryatia, Karelia, Mari El, Mordovia, and Udmurtia and in Belgorod, Kaliningrad, Kirov, Novgorod, Ryazan, Saratov, Sverdlovsk, Tomsk, and Yaroslavl oblasti, Perm kray, and Sevastopol city. Kumpilov is inaugurated on September 10, Aleksandr Brechalov (Udmurtia), Maksim Reshetnikov (Perm kray), Nikolay Lyubimov (Ryazan oblast), Yevgeny Kuyvashev (Sverdlovsk oblast), Sergey Zhvachkin (Tomsk oblast), and Dmitry Ovsyannikov (Sevastopol) on September 18, Vladimir Volkov (Mordovia), Igor Vasilyev (Kirov oblast), and Dmitry Mironov (Yaroslavl oblast) on September 19, Aleksandr Yevstifeyev (Mari El), Yevgeny Savchenko (Belgorod oblast), and Valery Radayev (Saratov oblast) on September 21, Aleksey Tsydenov (Buryatia) on September 22, Artur Parfenchikov (Karelia) on September 25, and Anton Alikhanov (Kaliningrad oblast) on September 29.

Malaysia: The sultan of Kedah and former yang di-pertuan agong of Malaysia (1970-75, 2011-16), Tuanku Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah ibni al-Marhum Sultan Badlishah, dies. On September 12 Tuanku Sallehuddin ibni al-Marhum Sultan Badlishah is proclaimed sultan of Kedah.
Norway: In parliamentary elections, the Labour Party wins 27.4% of the vote (49 of 169 seats), the Conservative Party 25% (45), the Progress Party 15.2% (27), the Centre Party 10.3% (19), the Socialist Left Party 6% (11), the Liberal Party 4.4% (8), the Christian People's Party 4.2% (8), the Green Party 3.2% (1), and the Red Party 2.4% (1). Turnout is 78.2%.

Canada: Former foreign minister (1974-76, 1982-84) Allan MacEachen dies.
Central African Republic: In a cabinet reshuffle, Marie-Noëlle Koyara becomes defense minister and Henri Wanzet Linguissara interior minister.

Falkland Islands: Nigel Phillips is sworn in as governor.
New Caledonia: The government fails for the second time to elect its president, Philippe Germain receiving 5 votes (6 needed), while 5 members abstain.
United States: The mayor of Seattle, Ed Murray, resigns, effective September 13. The president of the city council, Bruce Harrell, then becomes acting mayor. On September 18, however, Tim Burgess is appointed and sworn in as interim mayor.

Pitcairn Island: Laura Clarke is appointed governor, to take office in January 2018.

Senegal: Former foreign minister (1991-93) Djibo Ka dies.

Timor-Leste: Mari Alkatiri is appointed prime minister. The new government, sworn in on September 15, includes Aurélio Guterres as foreign minister, José Somotxo as defense minister, and Rui Gomes as finance minister.

Peru: Congress votes 77-22 to dismiss the cabinet of Prime Minister Fernando Zavala. On September 17 Mercedes Aráoz is appointed as prime minister and sworn in with her cabinet, including Claudia Cooper as finance minister, other key ministers remaining in place.

Iceland: Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson resigns.
India: Former lieutenant governor of Delhi (1989-90) Arjan Singh dies.
Mexico: Alfredo del Mazo Maza takes office as governor of México.

China: In parliamentary elections in Macau (turnout 57.2%), the Macau-Guangdong Union (10% of the vote) and the Union for Development (9.7%) win 2 seats each, and 10 other groups 1 each, of the 14 directly-elected seats; 12 seats are elected by functional constituencies and 7 appointed by the chief executive, for a total of 33.

Aruba: In parliamentary elections, the Aruban People's Party wins 39.8% of the vote (9 of 21 seats), the People's Electoral Movement 37.6% (9), Proud and Respected People 9.4% (2), and the Democratic Network 7.1% (1). Turnout is 82.9%.

New Zealand: In parliamentary elections, the National Party wins 44.4% of the vote (56 of 120 seats), the Labour Party 36.9% (46), the New Zealand First Party 7.2% (9), and the Green Party 6.3% (8). Turnout is 79.8%.

Germany: In parliamentary elections, the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union wins 32.9% of the vote (246 of 709 seats), the Social Democratic Party 20.5% (153), the Alternative for Germany 12.6% (94), the Free Democratic Party 10.7% (80), the Left 9.2% (69), and the Greens 8.9% (67). Turnout is 76.2%.
