Chapter IV.--Quintus the apostate.

Now one named Quintus, a Phrygian, who was but lately come from Phrygia, when he saw the wild beasts, became afraid. This was the man who forced himself and some others to come forward voluntarily [for trial]. Him the proconsul, after many entreaties, persuaded to swear and to offer sacrifice. Wherefore, brethren, we do not commend those who give themselves up [to suffering], seeing the Gospel does not teach so to do. ¹

Da war aber auch ein Mensch namens Kointos, ein gebürtiger Phrygier, der kurz zuvor aus seiner Heimatprovinz zugereist war. Beim Anblick der wilden Bestien wurde er feig. Und gerade er hatte sich freiwillig dem Gericht gestellt, ja sogar andere dazu verleitet! Es gelang dem Prokonsul, ihn durch vieles Zureden kirre zu machen: er schwur den S. 26 Glauben ab und opferte! Darum, liebe Brüder, billigen wir es nicht, wenn sich jemand zum Martyrium vordrängt. Jedenfalls ist das nicht die Lehre des Evangeliums (vgl. Matth. 10, 23).
