Salvation of the Rich Man

II.

Perhaps the reason of salvation appearing more difficult to the rich than to poor men, is not single but manifold. For some, merely hearing, and that in an off-hand way, the utterance of the Saviour, "that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven," ¹ despair of themselves as not destined to live, surrender all to the world, cling to the present life as if it alone was left to them, and so diverge more from the way to the life to come, no longer inquiring either whom the Lord and Master calls rich, or how that which is impossible to man becomes possible to God. But others rightly and adequately comprehend this, but attaching slight importance to the works which tend to salvation, do not make the requisite preparation for attaining to the objects of their hope. And I affirm both of these things of the rich who have learned both the Saviour's power and His glorious salvation. With those who are ignorant of the truth I have little concern.

1. Der Grund aber dafür, daß es für die Reichen offenbar schwieriger ist, zum Heil zu gelangen, als für die Mittellosen, dürfte nicht einfach, sondern mannigfach sein. 2. Die einen fassen nämlich das Wort des Herrn, daß leichter ein Kamel durch ein Nadelöhr gehe als daß ein Reicher in das Himmelreich komme,¹ ohne Rücksicht auf den Zusammenhang und oberflächlich auf und halten sich für verloren,² als sei schon bestimmt, daß sie nicht zum ewigen Leben gelangen können, geben sich deshalb in allem dieser Welt hin und hängen sich ganz an das diesseitige Leben, in der Überzeugung, daß nur dieses ihnen geblieben sei. So entfernen sie sich noch mehr von dem Wege zum Heil, da sie sich nicht mehr weder darum kümmern, wer die Reichen sind, von denen der Herr und Meister redet, noch darum, auf welche Weise das, was vor Menschen unmöglich ist, möglich werden kann.³ 3. Andere aber verstehen zwar das Herrenwort richtig und sinngemäß, unterlassen aber die Werke, die zum Heile führen, und versäumen so die notwendige Vorbedingung für das Erreichen des erhofften Ziels. 4. Dies beides sage ich aber in bezug auf die Reichen, die die Macht des Heilands und die in ihm erschienene Erlösung kennengelernt haben, während ich mich wenig S. 230 um die kümmere, die noch nicht in die wahre Lehre eingeweiht sind.
