2. Qu'ils sévissent contre vous, ceux qui ignorent les efforts qu'il faut faire pour découvrir la vérité, les difficultés qu'il faut vaincre pour se soustraire à l'erreur. Qu'ils sévissent contre vous, ceux qui ignorent combien il est rare, et surtout difficile de dompter les illusions de la chair, fût-on doué de l'intelligence la plus pieuse et la plus sereine. Qu'ils sévissent contre vous, ceux qui ignorent combien il est difficile de guérir l'oeil de l'homme intérieur jusqu'à lui permettre de contempler l'éclat du soleil. Je ne parle pas de ce soleil auquel vous prêtez un corps céleste, que vous adorez comme tel, et dont l'éclat, les rayons se laissent percevoir par les yeux charnels des hommes et des animaux; je parle de ce soleil dont le Prophète a dit : « Le soleil de justice s'est levé pour moi¹ », et dont il est écrit dans l'Evangile : « Il était la lumière véritable qui éclaire tout homme venant en ce monde² ». Qu'ils sévissent contre vous, ceux qui ignorent combien il en coûte de gémissements et de soupirs pour parvenir à la plus faible connaissance de Dieu. Enfin, qu'ils sévissent contre vous, ceux que Dieu a jusque-là soustraits à une erreur aussi profonde que la vôtre.

Chapter 2.--Why the Manichaeans Should Be More Gently Dealt with.

2.Let those rage against you who know not with what labor the truth is to be found and with what difficulty error is to be avoided. Let those rage against you who know not how rare and hard it is to overcome the fancies of the flesh by the serenity of a pious disposition. Let those rage against you who know not the difficulty of curing the eye of the inner man that he may gaze upon his Sun,--not that sun which you worship, and which shines with the brilliance of a heavenly body in the eyes of carnal men and of beasts,--but that of which it is written through the prophet, "The Sun of righteousness has arisen upon me;" ¹ and of which it is said in the gospel, "That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world." ² Let those rage against you who know not with what sighs and groans the least particle of the knowledge of God is obtained. And, last of all, let those rage against you who have never been led astray in the same way that they see that you are.
