ACHAIA

ACHAIA, taken in its largest sense, comprehended the whole region of Greece, or Hellas, now called Livadia. Achaia Proper, however, was a province of Greece, of which Corinth was the capital ; and embracing the whole western part of the Peloponnesus. It is worthy of remark, that Luke speaks of Gallio as being deputy (proconsul) of Achaia, at the time that Paul preached there, (Acts xviii. 12.)' which was, indeed, the title borne by the superior officer in Achaia at that time, but which did not long continue, nor had it long been so at the time he wrote.
