Chapter 3

 
 
 
 
1. And it shall come to pass afterwards that I will pour out My spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and daughters shall prophesy; your elders shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.   א.
And it shall come to pass afterwards: in the future.   :
upon all flesh: I.e, upon anyone whose heart becomes soft as flesh. Comp. (Ezekiel 36:26) “And I will give you a heart of flesh.”   :
2. And even upon the slaves and the maidservants in those days will I pour out My spirit.   ב.
3. And I will perform signs in the heavens and on the earth: Blood, fire, and pillars of smoke.   ג.
and pillars of smoke: Heb. וְתִימְרוֹת. Perpendicular pillars of smoke, as tall as a palm tree.   :
4. The sun shall turn to darkness, and the moon to blood, prior to the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.   ד.
shall turn to darkness: to embarrass those who prostrate themselves to the sun.   :
5. And it shall come to pass that whoever shall call in the name of the Lord shall be delivered, for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be a deliverance, as the Lord said, and among the survivors whom the Lord invites.   ה.
And it shall come to pass that whoever shall call etc. as… said: And where did He say it? (Deut. 28:10), “And all the peoples of the earth shall see that the Name of the Lord is called on you.” [from Mechilta, Ex. 12: 25]   :
and among the survivors: And in the remnant that will remain.   :
whom the Lord invites: Heb. קֹרֵא, an expression of those invited to a banquet or to the service of the king, an expression of invitation.
