Chapter 1

1βιβλος γενεσεως ιησου χριστου υιου δαυιδ υιου αβρααμ

liber generationis Iesu Christi filii David filii Abraham

THE book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham:

2αβρααμ εγεννησεν τον ισαακ ισαακ δε εγεννησεν τον ιακωβ ιακωβ δε

Abraham genuit Isaac Isaac autem genuit Iacob Iacob autem

εγεννησεν τον ιουδαν και τους αδελφους αυτου

genuit Iudam et fratres eius

Abraham begot Isaac. And Isaac begot Jacob. And Jacob begot Judas and his brethren.

3ιουδας δε εγεννησεν τον φαρες και τον ζαρα εκ της θαμαρ φαρες δε

Iudas autem genuit Phares et Zara de Thamar Phares autem

εγεννησεν τον εσρωμ εσρωμ δε εγεννησεν τον αραμ

genuit Esrom Esrom autem genuit Aram

And Judas begot Phares and Zara of Thamar. And Phares begot Esron. And Esron begot Aram.

4αραμ δε εγεννησεν τον αμιναδαβ αμιναδαβ δε εγεννησεν τον ναασσων

Aram autem genuit Aminadab Aminadab autem genuit Naasson

ναασσων δε εγεννησεν τον σαλμων

Naasson autem genuit Salmon

And Aram begot Aminadab. And Aminadab begot Naasson. And Naasson begot Salmon.

5σαλμων δε εγεννησεν τον βοοζ εκ της ραχαβ βοοζ δε εγεννησεν τον

Salmon autem genuit Booz de Rachab Booz autem genuit

ωβηδ εκ της ρουθ ωβηδ δε εγεννησεν τον ιεσσαι

Obed ex Ruth Obed autem genuit Iesse

And Salmon begot Booz of Rahab. And Booz begot Obed of Ruth. And Obed begot Jesse.

6ιεσσαι δε εγεννησεν τον δαυιδ τον βασιλεα δαυιδ δε ο βασιλευς

Iesse autem genuit David regem David autem rex

εγεννησεν τον σολομωνα εκ της του ουριου

genuit Salomonem ex ea quae fuit Uriae

And Jesse begot David the king. And David the king begot Solomon, of her that had been the wife of Urias.

7σολομων δε εγεννησεν τον ροβοαμ ροβοαμ δε εγεννησεν τον αβια αβια

Salomon autem genuit Roboam Roboam autem genuit Abiam Abia

δε εγεννησεν τον ασα

autem genuit Asa

And Solomon begot Roboam. And Roboam begot Abia. And Abia begot Asa.

8ασα δε εγεννησεν τον ιωσαφατ ιωσαφατ δε εγεννησεν τον ιωραμ ιωραμ

Asa autem genuit Iosaphat Iosaphat autem genuit Ioram Ioram

δε εγεννησεν τον οζιαν

autem genuit Oziam

And Asa begot Josaphat. And Josaphat begot Joram. And Joram begot Ozias.

9οζιας δε εγεννησεν τον ιωαθαμ ιωαθαμ δε εγεννησεν τον αχαζ αχαζ δε

Ozias autem genuit Ioatham Ioatham autem genuit Achaz Achaz autem

εγεννησεν τον εζεκιαν

genuit Ezechiam

And Ozias begot Joatham. And Joatham begot Achaz. And Achaz begot Ezechias.

10εζεκιας δε εγεννησεν τον μανασση μανασσης δε εγεννησεν τον αμων

Ezechias autem genuit Manassen Manasses autem genuit Amon

αμων δε εγεννησεν τον ιωσιαν

Amon autem genuit Iosiam

And Ezechias begot Manasses. And Manesses begot Amon. And Amon begot Josias.

11ιωσιας δε εγεννησεν τον ιεχονιαν και τους αδελφους αυτου επι της

Iosias autem genuit Iechoniam et fratres eius in

μετοικεσιας βαβυλωνος

transmigratione Babylonis

And Josias begot Jechonias and his brethren in the transmigration of Babylon.

12μετα δε την μετοικεσιαν βαβυλωνος ιεχονιας εγεννησεν τον σαλαθιηλ

et post transmigrationem Babylonis Iechonias genuit Salathihel

σαλαθιηλ δε εγεννησεν τον ζοροβαβελ

Salathihel autem genuit Zorobabel

And after the transmigration of Babylon, Jechonias begot Salathiel. And Salathiel begot Zorobabel.

13ζοροβαβελ δε εγεννησεν τον αβιουδ αβιουδ δε εγεννησεν τον ελιακειμ

Zorobabel autem genuit Abiud Abiud autem genuit Eliachim

ελιακειμ δε εγεννησεν τον αζωρ

Eliachim autem genuit Azor

And Zorobabel begot Abiud. And Abiud begot Eliacim. And Eliacim begot Azor.

14αζωρ δε εγεννησεν τον σαδωκ σαδωκ δε εγεννησεν τον αχειμ αχειμ δε

Azor autem genuit Saddoc Saddoc autem genuit Achim Achim autem

εγεννησεν τον ελιουδ

genuit Eliud

And Azor begot Sadoc. And Sadoc begot Achim. And Achim begot Eliud.

15ελιουδ δε εγεννησεν τον ελεαζαρ ελεαζαρ δε εγεννησεν τον ματθαν

Eliud autem genuit Eleazar Eleazar autem genuit Matthan

ματθαν δε εγεννησεν τον ιακωβ

Matthan autem genuit Iacob

And Eliud begot Eleazar. And Eleazar begot Mathan. And Mathan begot Jacob.

16ιακωβ δε εγεννησεν τον ιωσηφ τον ανδρα μαριας εξ ης εγεννηθη

Iacob autem genuit Ioseph virum Mariae de qua natus est

ιησους ο λεγομενος χριστος

Iesus qui vocatur Christus

And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

17πασαι ουν αι γενεαι απο αβρααμ εως δαυιδ γενεαι δεκατεσσαρες και απο

omnes ergo generationes ab Abraham usque ad David generationes quattuordecim et a

δαυιδ εως της μετοικεσιας βαβυλωνος γενεαι δεκατεσσαρες και απο της

David usque ad transmigrationem Babylonis generationes quattuordecim et a

μετοικεσιας βαβυλωνος εως του χριστου γενεαι δεκατεσσαρες

transmigratione Babylonis usque ad Christum generationes quattuordecim

So all the generations, from Abraham to David, are fourteen generations. And from David to the transmigration of Babylon, are fourteen generations: and from the transmigration of Babylon to Christ are fourteen generations.

18του δε ιησου χριστου η γεννησις ουτως ην μνηστευθεισης γαρ της

Christi autem generatio sic erat cum esset desponsata

μητρος αυτου μαριας τω ιωσηφ πριν η συνελθειν αυτους ευρεθη εν γαστρι

mater eius Maria Ioseph antequam convenirent inventa est in utero

εχουσα εκ πνευματος αγιου

habens de Spiritu Sancto

Now the generation of Christ was in this wise. When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child, of the Holy Ghost.

19ιωσηφ δε ο ανηρ αυτης δικαιος ων και μη θελων αυτην παραδειγματισαι

Ioseph autem vir eius cum esset iustus et nollet eam traducere

εβουληθη λαθρα απολυσαι αυτην

voluit occulte dimittere eam

Whereupon Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing publicly to expose her, was minded to put her away privately.

20ταυτα δε αυτου ενθυμηθεντος ιδου αγγελος κυριου κατ οναρ εφανη

haec autem eo cogitante ecce angelus Domini in somnis apparuit

αυτω λεγων ιωσηφ υιος δαυιδ μη φοβηθης παραλαβειν μαριαμ την γυναικα

ei dicens Ioseph fili David noli timere accipere Mariam coniugem

σου το γαρ εν αυτη γεννηθεν εκ πνευματος εστιν αγιου

tuam quod enim in ea natum est de Spiritu Sancto est

But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost.

21τεξεται δε υιον και καλεσεις το ονομα αυτου ιησουν αυτος γαρ σωσει

pariet autem filium et vocabis nomen eius Iesum ipse enim salvum

τον λαον αυτου απο των αμαρτιων αυτων

faciet populum suum a peccatis eorum

And she shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name JESUS. For he shall save his people from their sins.

22τουτο δε ολον γεγονεν ινα πληρωθη το ρηθεν υπο του κυριου δια του

hoc autem totum factum est ut adimpleretur id quod dictum est a Domino per

προφητου λεγοντος

prophetam dicentem

Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which the Lord spoke by the prophet, saying:

23ιδου η παρθενος εν γαστρι εξει και τεξεται υιον και καλεσουσιν το ονομα

ecce virgo in utero habebit et pariet filium et vocabunt nomen

αυτου εμμανουηλ ο εστιν μεθερμηνευομενον μεθ ημων ο θεος

eius Emmanuhel quod est interpretatum Nobiscum Deus

Behold a virgin shall be with child, and bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

24διεγερθεις δε ο ιωσηφ απο του υπνου εποιησεν ως προσεταξεν αυτω ο

exsurgens autem Ioseph a somno fecit sicut praecepit ei

αγγελος κυριου και παρελαβεν την γυναικα αυτου

angelus Domini et accepit coniugem suam

And Joseph rising up from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and took unto him his wife.

25και ουκ εγινωσκεν αυτην εως ου ετεκεν τον υιον αυτης τον

et non cognoscebat eam donec peperit filium suum

πρωτοτοκον και εκαλεσεν το ονομα αυτου ιησουν

primogenitum et vocavit nomen eius Iesum

And he knew her not till she brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
