He will have great power given to him by Satan, and he will demand that people worship him. False Prophet- a religious figure who will lead people to follow and worship the Antichrist. He will have great power given to him from Satan. Great Harlot of Babylon- an empire that is made up of materialism and atheism. This empire has always been on earth under different nations and kingdoms. The Great Harlot will be destroyed during the Great Tribulation. Great Tribulation- the final three and a half year period of time before the 2nd coming of Christ. It will be a time of great distress. Satan will exercise great power and he will lead a great persecution against the Church. 24 Elders- these are made up of 12 Old Testament Patriarchs and the 12 Apostles. They will hold a special judicial rank in Heaven. 4 living creatures- the heavenly powers/angels, and all creation, the dominations and principalities and all the earth that worships God. 144,000 sealed- all the saints of the Great Tribulation. They are not only the Jews who convert to Christianity during the Great Tribulation, but all believers during that time. The number 144,000 is not to be understood as a literal 144,000, but figurative for a great multitude. 7 angels of the 7 churches in Asia- they are the 7 bishops of the 7 churches that were addressed in chapters 2 and 3. 1000 year reign of Christ- the whole period of the Church, not a literal 1000 years. mark of the beast- it is not a literal mark on the hand or forehead, but it is the rejection of the Lord. On the forehead means confession of faith while on the hand means the works of the hands. Rejection of the Lord will be required by the Antichrist in order to buy or sell within his world economy. the dragon- the Devil, Satan. the beast coming out of the sea- the Antichrist the beast coming out of the earth- the False Prophet seven seals- important mysteries concerning the past, present, and future events of the Church, and they are revealed to him through various phases called "seals". seven trumpets- Judgments from God that are directed to those who reject Him. They happen within the Great Tribulation. Battle of Armageddon- Satan makes one last failed attempt to destroy the saints on earth by gathering all his forces to surround the saints on earth, but before they strike the saints God will destroy them. New heaven and new earth- This does not mean that God will create a whole new earth and heavens by bringing the present one into non-existence, but He will remove all the marks of sin from the universe and he will bring it back to its original state. Since the saints will be glorified, God will make the saints dwelling place that way too. New Jerusalem- the Church in her final glory |
