Wisdom is only for the righteous
1 Love justice, you that are the judges of the earth. Think of the Lord in goodness, and seek him in simplicity of heart. 2 For he is found by them that tempt him not: and he shows himself to them that have faith in him. 3 For perverse thoughts seperate from God: and his power, when it is tried, reproves the unwise: 4 For wisdom will not enter into a malicious soul, nor dwell in a body subject to sins. 5 For the Holy Spirit of discipline will flee from the deceitful, and will withdraw himself from thoughts that are without understanding, and he shall not abide when iniquity comes in.

God possesses Wisdom and knows men's hearts
6 For the spirit of wisdom is benevolent, and will not acquit the evil speaker from his lips: for God is witness of his reins, and he is a true searcher of his heart, and a hearer of his tongue. 7 For the spirit of the Lord has filled the whole world: and that, which contains all things, has knowledge of the voice. 8 Therefore he that speaks unjust things cannot be hid, neither shall the chastising judgment pass him by. 9 For inquisition shall be made into the thoughts of the ungodly: and the hearing of his words shall come to God, to the chastising of his iniquities. 10 For the ear of jealousy hears all things, and the tumult of murmuring shall not be hid. 11 Keep yourselves therefore from murmuring, which profits nothing, and refrain your tongue from detraction, for an obscure speech shall not go for nought: and the mouth that contradicts, kills the soul. 12 Seek not death in the error of your life, neither procure destruction by the works of your hands.

Death is the result of sin
13 For God made not death, neither has he pleasure in the destruction of the living. 14 For he created all things that they might be: and he made the nations of the earth for health: and there is no poison of destruction in them, nor kingdom of hell upon the earth. 15 For justice is perpetual and immortal. 16 But the wicked with works and words have called it to them: and esteeming it a friend have fallen away, and have made a covenant with it: because they are worthy to be of the part thereof.

Commentary for Wisdom 1

1:1 Love justice: Not only act justly but love justice. (Interlinear Gloss) judges of the earth: Humankind receives power over everything Gen 1:26-27, because a spiritual person, made like to God, judges all things while being judged by no one. (St. Isidore Ques Gen 1.13-14)

1:2 There are four ways of tempting God, namely, by wanting to experience the power of God without just cause as did those who tempted Christ by asking for a sign from heaven, as in Matthew 16:1; or to experience his wisdom like the Sadducees who asked him a question that in their judgment was insoluble for those who believe in resurrection, as in Matthew 22:3ff.; or his justice as the Pharisees who, in Matthew 22:16, questioned him about paying taxes: ‘Master, we know that you are a true speaker and teach the way of God in truth’; or his mercy when the Jews questioned him about the woman taken in adultery, as in John 8:3ff. Every such temptation arises from mistrust even though nothing about God is to be mistrusted, and so every such temptation is forbidden. (St. Bonaventure)

1:4 The wisdom which is a gift of the Holy Spirit, enables us to judge aright of Divine things, or of other things according to Divine rules, by reason of a certain union with Divine things, which is the effect of charity. Therefore the divine wisdom which we are speaking of, not earthly wisdom, presupposes charity. Now charity is incompatible with mortal sin. (St. Thomas
Aquinas Sum Theo 2.44.4)

1:5 Even though the Spirit withdraws from them, they will not remain exempt from correction. (St. Bonaventure)

1:7 God is everywhere, within everything but not closed in, outside everything but not excluded, above everything but not raised up, below everything but not put down. (St. Gregory the Great Mor Job bk 2.2) knowledge of the voice: Of the diverse languages by the Holy Spirit as is clear in Acts 2:4. (Interlienar Gloss)

1:10 ear of jealousy: That is, God is jealous from the love He has for a soul. (Interlinear Gloss)

1:11 profits nothing: Idle words are spoken without benefit for the speaker or the listener. (Interlinear Gloss) kills the soul: Some people have misunderstood this as if the soul were not immortal. No, it refers to spiritually ruining the soul. (Fr. William Most)

1:14-16 kingdom of hell: that is, eternal perdition. (St. Bonaventure) The Devil could not have harmed people unless they had agreed. (Interlinear Gloss)
